Guys,

I am currently running 1 evga 970 acx 2.0+, running nv surround 2d at 3240x1920 on 3 monitors in portrait. I've had pretty good FPS until recently in games like Witcher 3, GTA V and ARK (I know still alpha blah). I'm averaging 25-30fps with high settings. I have the option to buy a 2nd evga 970 acx 2.0 (non plus?) from a coworker and wondering if I should go this route. I'm hesitant because this 970 seems to be the best buy reference card with 2 dvi, 1 display port, and 1 hdmi and missing the mem heat sinks and copper pipe. Will I be happy with a 2nd 970 at this resolution and lack of cooling my current card has?

and a follow up question to the resolution, where exactly does 3240x1920 stand with 1440p and 4k? is this truly 1920p? 1440p > 1920p > 4K?

I have 04g-p4-3975-kr now and the other 970 is 04g-p4-3979-kb
 
I can't really speak to your first question (although I just came off of a dual GPU setup with 2 R9 280X's... never again. SLI may be a different story though), but to your second:

4K: 3840 * 2160 = 8294400 pixels
1440p: 2560 * 1440 = 3686400 pixels
You: 3240 * 1920 = 6220800 pixels

Or 69% more than 1440p and 25% less than 4K

Percent over 1440p:
(6220800-3686400)/3686400 = 0.6875

Percent below 4K:
(6220800-8294400)/8294400 = -0.25
 
My 970s are the regular ACX cards, both overclocked, right next to each other. I have no case fans, and case insulation for sound...been just fine got them right at release.

These cards don't pump heat like the older generations.

I get 50-55 fps in Witcher 3 at 2560x1600 (4 million pixels) on Ultra, so I don't think performance will be great at 6 million, but better than what you have.

I am having a helluva time getting SLI + Surround working. A Windows message pops up at startup to connect the SLI bridge. The SLI bridge is connected and basically new out of the plastic wrap. I reseated it no change. I did some research and see its a common issue with x58 boards. Also saw a link to increase low memory gap but that is not a setting in the BIOS. I found the DifferentSLIAuto1.3.zip tool and patched nvlddmkm.sys. After a reboot I can change SLI settings. I proceed to setup Surround and receive a connection error and redirected to Nvidia's website to configure Surround. I've tried every layout for 970 2 way SLI 2d Surround with no luck. I had 3 display port off the single 970 working fine. I've tried multiple combos of DVI + DVI + DP, DVI + DP + DP, DP+DP+DP and no luck at all. I tried drivers 353.06, 347.88 and 347.52 with clean install option. I swapped the video cards physically around and repeated the majority of the steps above. I am thinking the root cause is the SLI connector and the patching to get around this issue on the x58. To ease my sanity i disabled one card, and verified i can still enable Surround on a single 970. Anything I'm missing?
 
I would look into selling the 970 and getting the 980 Ti. Similar performance as 970 SLI but with 2 GB more VRAM and at the resolution you're running you'll need it. I tried the 970 SLI at 4K DSR and it worked fine as long as antialiasing was limited, otherwise you'll easily go over VRAM limits. 970 SLI is good for 1440p but not 4K (or near 4K)

I considered that but not too many people in my area pick up the high end computer gear on craigslist. I'd post in the F/S forums here but would prefer to keep it local. So I chatted with EVGA support and determined that the SSC and SSC+ 970 models will not SLI together. They have generously offered an RMA of the SSC with a compatible SSC+. Loving EVGA right now.

man it seems like SLI'ing 970s is a pain in the ass. glad EVGA is taking care of you, i've had good experiences with them in the past. awesome company.
 
970 SLI was a stuttering mess for me @ 1440p with anything that went over 3.5GB VRAM usage, really wouldn't recommend it.

this was my first sli experience and it was definitely a pain in the ass. my coworker was sling the ssc and a zotac amp extreme with no problems so possibly limited to evga 970 + evga 970. here's to hoping the replacement goes well. will report back when I receive the replacement card
 
i don't have any links but i've read bout others having issues with various brands of 970's.
 
I had the same issue with sli'ing a launch 970 and a current one. It appears Nvidia/other manufacturers came out with a new version of the 970 that won't sli, awesome right? There's some patch/hack software that sometimes works. I'd recommend returning/RMA'ing one. I returned the one I got last week from Amazon. Not very fond of Nvidia at the moment.
 
Running SLI EVGA 970s in my rig. I occasionally connect it to my 4K TV and play games without any issues.

I'll try out Witcher 3 later and see how well it handles it. I suspect it will do so just fine, but I did order a single 980 for my HTPC that currently has a 750 Ti in it. After experiencing 4K I don't want to go back to 1080P and well the 750 Ti just isn't cutting it.

The differentsliauto patch did work for me however I could not enable nv surround afterwards. It is mentioned that performance is shite as the patch basically uses the pcie lanes to sli. I shipped back the ssc yesterday and hoping to receive the replacement ssc+ by end of the week / early next week.
