Yet Another 6800 Noise Thread

I know this has been beaten into the ground, but after reading the other threads I'm still unsure about whether I want to get a 6800GT.

I'm getting a Shuttle SN85G4V2 SFF system, and I want a hot GPU. The 6800GT seems like the likely choice. I can't run ATI (not compatible with my LCD), so it's really the only option. Here's the problem: my MSI 5900XT has spoiled me. I hate fan noise.

People have said that the 6800 is "quiet" and "a little louder than the 9800XT". That's good, but I've heard people say that the Iceberq 4 is quiet - which is anything but true.

So, my question is, for those of you with Shuttle SFF systems and 6800s, how quiet is quiet? Can you hear the 6800 clearly over the CPU/PSU fan? Is it an annoying pitch?

Someone was nice enough to post audio files, but they were crap quality. Perhaps someone could take a recording.

<not a fanboy or anything> How is the ATI not compatible with your LCD?

I had a MSI FX5900 and I didn't notice the difference in noise between that and the 6800GT.

I was wondering the same thing, I have never had any compatibility problems with Ati and LCD's, no matter what the model/brand.

I'd say that my 6800 GT is about the same noise level as my 9800 XT was...

When the blower is at full throttle I can just barely hear it above the quiet hum of my water pump. Even at full speed it's barely a whisper with the side of the case open, and even then it's not unpleasant. There is no whine or pitch to speak of, it's just a neutral whir.

I dont know what everyone is talking about. I dont think the GT is extraordinarily loud at all. My GT replaced a 9800 Pro and I didnt notice any extra noise. Yeah, I have a big case with several fans, but I wouldnt base my decision of purchasing this card on that a few people think its loud. The NV Silencer will be a great cooling solution and it should be out soon also.

The 6800 GT is slightly louder than the MSI 5900 I had before, but only very slightly. It's a low hum, so it's not that annoying. I had an AIW 9800 Pro and that got on my nerves. Its little fan made this high-pitched whine. That was very noticable vs. the 5900. I'd say the reference 6800 cooler is similar to putting a semi-quiet 80 mm fan into your case. Take a 28 or 29 dB fan and put in your case and close it. If you deal with that, you can deal with the 6800.

Does anyone know if Zalman ZM80D-HP would fit on a 6800GT and cool it at least as good as the stock HSF? I'm about to make the move but I hate the noise more than I want the extra speed.

It has something to do with the DVI sense pin not being properly implemented in my display. I've tried different displays and different cards (a 9600XT and two 9800 Pro cards) and none would work with DVI and my monitor. The monitor shows up as not connected in the control panel and only the VGA output works.

Both of the NVIDIA cards I've owned (both had Silicon Image TDMS transcoders) worked fine out of the box.

ATI does have problems with the Dell 19/20" LCD's and the card not recognizing it correctly (causes XP to reboot on startup, not work without both the DVI and VGA connect, etc). This is moreso with the 9600 line of cards. There are two or three threads running the the 1000's of responses, on Rag3d, to back it up. I ran into this problem with my old 9600 Pro. As a matter of fact my X800 doesn't even show the monitor is connected (via DVI) on the monitor tab of the drivers.....

Haha, most of the time its people not upgrading their monitor drivers and turning off-EDID/DDC autodetect which causes the problem. Which is a big problem, because in order for you to install the monitor drivers, you need to be able to see the screen first place, and most people don't know how to run safe mode to install them.

DVI is a very picky beast, many times it will only work at 60 hz (or less) and if you try forcing it to a higher level, it just will give you a nice black screen everytime windows boots up. Its not a problem... Its a limitation of the DVI technology, which is one of the reasons why I'm still in the CRT camp.

Ok, I have the 6800gt installed, and I can report that my CPU fan completely drowns out anything else in the case even if I turn it down to 3000rpm's instead of 5000. So yes, it is plenty quiet.

BTW: If it is a noisy fan that should be quiet, usually a drop of thin oil under the sticker will solve the problem.
