Yes, Linux gurus, I'm reading the docs!

They seem to be in English, but for some reason, they don't make much sense.

I upgraded my firewall boxen very recently so I could run a full Gigabit network between machines. Unfortunately, the upgrade borked my FAH startup sequence, and from reading the online stuff, I can't just place it back where it was.

The box is running SME Server 7pre1, which is now based on CentOS 4.1, which in turn is based on RedHat Enterprise 4, which causes all documentation to go off the deep end. I gave myself my first manual page papercuts in IBM Xenix, and *know* that local startup stuff goes in /etc/rc.d/rc.local .

Not anymore! Crud and flounder breath, what the hell happened to simplicity? Now I'm dealing with running Sxx scripts in run level 7, or dropping *something* in an obscure directory (/etc/e-smith/events/local) , and all I want to do is change directory, fire off FAH with a 'nohup' and terminate the script.

Anyone out there dealt with this? Granted, the box is a "weak sister" Intel P3-833, but it runs 24/7 with not much else to do, so timeless Tinkers can be chewed indefinitely.

This may help, but I'm not sure. I've never worked with that distro, and their documentation appears to have been written by monkeys who don't understand the concept of linking relevant pages. You may consider switching to a different firewall - I hear ipcop or smoothwall are pretty good.

I've never seen that distro either. So I can't offer much on writing a startup script.

As far as folding goes, you can fold with large WUs turned on with that machine to get some more points. My P3 850 linux box at work w/ 256MB ram constantly grabs 600 pointers and finishes on time easily. Although it can bite you in the ass too, as it grabbed a 700+ pointer last week. It will finish on time, but it's going slowly.

I can personally vouch for IPCop. Been using it for a while, and it works very well. Quite a few useful addons for it as well.

I've been using SME since the days when it was the "unsupported" version of Mitel's E-Smith small business server. I'm not only using it as a firewall, but also as my file server, since it runs Samba pretty much painlessly.

That thread unhappy_mage pointed to was really, REALLY painful to read. It reminds me of what a bunch of elitists UNIX programmers / admins can come off as. Reread the so-called "advice" that poor Boinc user was receiving, and wonder why nothing was getting accomplished.

What I've been using in the past was tacking this snippet to the end of rc.local:

cd /home/e-smith/this-path-munged/folding
./FAH5-console.exe >/dev/null 2>&1 &

Simple, to the point, effective.

Now, I've got to figure out where to punch it in with this new stuff. Oy.

Yikes.

It wasn't like that back in the days before Mitel glommed onto E-Smith and changed it to their paid-support SME (Small - Medium Enterprise) Server. People were friendlier, you had the archetypical "It's UNIX, you just gotta KNOW!" on occasion (the chap who helped me along with Xenix tended to do that a lot ), but things did get done.

U_M and others here, you guys are great. Guess I'm spoiled hanging out with you bunch of [H]ardcore folding fanatics...

I love my smoothie. It does it's job well and it just works. Probably wouldn't be useful as a file server but if you just want to fold on your firewall smoothwall works well.
