I purchased a pair of these headphones today from a local guitar shop and I am very pleased with them so far! linky @ zzsounds.com I was looking for a lightweight, comfortable and decent sounding pair of closed cans that wouldn't break my bank, and these fit the part very well. I haven't found any reviews of these, and in fact Yamaha's website doesn't even list them, so I thought I'd share my experience.
I am by no means an audiophile, although I am coming from a pair of Sennheiser HD497's (which currently do not work thanks to my dog...) which are generally regarded as decent. The sound quality is comparable, although the highs are slightly toned down and the bass is more pronounced than on the 497's. Comfort wise there is no comparison; the ear cups are very large and do not squish my ears at all, and the headband does not put very much pressure on my head. They are very light compared with other closed cans that I tried on and handled. These headphones fold up, and although this is nice the part where they fold seems a little flimsy. The cord comes out of only one ear and is much thicker than Sennheiser cords, although I doubt it is dog-proof nonetheless
. It is advertised as "8 feet", although when coiled is only perhaps half that. These seem very insulated and block most outside noise, and when I am listening on them other people in the same room can't hear the music at all. I've been playing CS:S on my desktop speakers since the "accident" with my headphones (although I secretly doubt my dog chewed through the cord unintentionally...) and now I can finally hear where my enemies are walking again.
Anyways I am very happy with my purchase, especially for only $45 (or $35 if I had been patient and ordered them online.) I could see these headphones being nice for portable use due to the short coiled cord, ability to fold up and light weight. If anyone has a question or comment, or would like pictures or something let me know. Peace
