xtpe & processor speed

im running an athlon 64 3000+ rig and i have an ati radeon x800 xt pe(full sold off my flashes). And im only scoring about 12.2k maximum in 3dmark. I bought some pc 4000 ram and started tewaking my overclocking skills and got up to a stable 2.55 ghz (hell of an overclock for stock!1!@), but even after all that my score only boosted up to 12.5k.... is my card the bottleneck here, orwhat, btw at 2.5 my htt was at 4x250=1000 and at 2.0 its at 200x5 so same htt speeds

I would put a guess that your processor is the bottleneck as xtpe's only unleash their true power when paired with top of the range cpu's. They then give 13-14k. Im using my P4 560 @ 4.23ghz with an xtpe and get just over 13, so i think your score is bout right.

Because 3dmark doesnt really care what CPU speed you have. Run it at stock, and run it at full overclock, and the score will be close to the same. Just one other reason why 3dmarks dont show what kind of game frames you're going to get.

This interests me as well since I'll be getting that near setup soon. What/where is the exact bonus for spending a few hundred extra on a CPU with that vid card?

Pretty much everything made by Valve.

If you dont see any improvement in frames from half a gig overclock, you arent stressing your system, simple as that. Or perhaps you are playing an older game, and already getting very high frames. You probably wont notice the difference from 100, to say 130fps.

That shows about a 20fps increase from a 1.8gig to a 2.5gig A64 in HL2. Thats not counting the extra bandwidth you're probably getting from overclocking. There are various tests to show CPU scaling if you google some.

answer for your question here....

and if you are testing games to see the fps increase for your cpu OC... use resolutions of 1024x768 and under..any higher than you're probably just gonna be cpu limited.

3dmark 03 is gpu dependant. It will show the biggest increases with gpu clock speed tweaks. 3dmark 01 is the best choice for showing cpu/memory gains.

yup I overclocked my a64 by 200mhz and got almost 1000 poingts increase

You should be able to bust 13k no problem with that set-up Will. Keep tweaking. Overclock the card a little.

A 1000 point increase on 3dmark 01, right? I wasn't sure what you were referring to.

I got a 500 point increase in 03 going from a 2.6A, PC2100 and 9800Pro (6,000 points) to a 3.2C, PC3200 and the same 9800Pro. (6,500 points)
