My guess is that this is a heat issue but I'll describe it and let you guys give me your diagnosis.

I bought an X800 XT about 3 months or so ago. It was working great all the way up to the 5.1 drivers. The 5.1's came out I did a clean install of windows and installed the 5.1's. (All other drivers are current; in all my clean window installs) After installing the 5.1's I started getting VPU recovery errors. This would happen very sporadically; really no rhyme or reason when they'd happen. They could/would happen after 5 mins of game play or after about 2 hours of game play. So I thought it was just the 5.1's. So I did another clean install and I installed the 4.12's; which previously I had no issues at all with. Well the same thing started happening with the 4.12's on my clean install as well. So I do another clean install, reformat and install the 5.1's again just thinking that it's something with Steam's most recent patch or something.

Well recently the issue has started happening a lot more; at least 3 or 4 times in about 1.5 hours. My system is in my sig and I've got the SN95G5 which does make my cards run a little hotter but nothing to the point where over heating I would be an issue; I wouldn't think. My side panels on the case have the mesh sides so breathing shouldn't be an issue.

What do you guys think? Video card issue? Granted this issue just started happening one day out of the blue. The cards fan runs as it should. As I'm sitting here typing the temp on the card is only 43C; I don’t know the load temp. 

What do you guys think? Heat or Valve update messing something up? I don't play another other games right now; just CS:S.
 
From the sound of things I'd say heat, have you tried the card in a well-ventilated tower-type case? If it still does it there you could eliminate heat, assuming the heatsink is on good.
 
I think its heat too. Hopefully you didnt damage it somehow. Did you play any other games or run a benchmark or something?
 
oddly enough benchmarks run fine. :( :confused: :confused:

Maybe CS:S really heats her up for some reason. Any other ideas since benchmarks run ok? I might take the heatsink off today and re-thermal paste it.
 
I just ran 3Dmark03 and it made it through without a hitch.... I'm not thinking this is an heat issue the more aps I run.
 
So I just ran some more benchmarks and I never received any VPU recover error or any lockups. This indicates to me that heat is not the issue. What are you guys thoughts?
 
Although I've not had CS: S issues with VPU on, it has been known to be the cause of issues. Might try actually turning it off.

I have turned it off. I should have been more clear on that. When I have it off that is when I get lock-up issues.

So with it on while playing CS:S I get the VPU recovery error.

With VPU recovery off I get lock-ups; but only in CS:S.

I honestly can not find one other person that is getting the issue that I am. This indicates to me something wrong with my video card. Would you guys think/assume the same?? :confused:

I just got done with a clean install of windows XP. All updates and service packs have been installed. I need to install steam and load my games. I also removed my video card and replaced the paste that was on the card (it was all hard and dried out) and replaced it with some AC.

I'll know more in a minute or so if it is an overheating issue with CS:S.
 
Well I've reformatted, installed all updates and what not. Took my video card out and re-applied new thermal paste and played some CS:S. The issue while playing did not appear. I played for about 40 minutes. Any other time the issue would have been present within those 40 mins at least once. So I think the AC5 fixed it.
 
CHeck your PSU. Those Shuttles may have good rails, but they are still low-powered units. PM Ice Czar for some more info on possible replacements. The guy knows more about PSU's than the engineers who designed them.
 
Oh boy, i hope you get my message in time.

Try going to the Display Control Panel -> Settings -> Options (tab)

And in there, try running in "Alternate DVI operational mode". I know is sounds strange, but I've had it fix problems exactly like you're discribing.

Also try the "reduce DVI frequency...." option

I've had the problem you you have on two different X800 cards and it was fixed by doing the above
