It looks like I'm going to need to buy an Xserve, problem is, is that I have to buy it soon, knowing it's going to be changed.

I'm looking at getting the dual 2.3ghz w/ 2gb ram for webserving and media storage on a Xraid.

So I want to know your opinions on the future of Xserve and the Xserve I will be buying and its strengths/weaknesses?

Brad

I think XServe will be the last Mac product to go Intel. You'll probably have to wait at least six more months to see an Intel version.

If you need it now, go with the G5 and be happy with it.

You have to remember that OSX Server will have to be rewritten as a Universal binary so don't expect Apple to be releasing anything any time soon (and I'm sure they want to wait for Conroe/Merom from Intel for the XServes).

If you're that worried about it, buy a slighly used XServe from eBay and save yourself some money so you can upgrade to Intel when they are launched.

I wouldn't worry. Apple will support PPC stuff for a number of years after the complete switch to Intel.

Look how long they supported OS 9

That shouldn't be much of a problem. While I don't think OS X Server will be out until the "Pro Mac" or Intel Xserve, actually porting Server to Intel should be a piece of cake. Hell, for the most part, Server is just Client with some extra applications. Most of these applications are normal Xcode-compiled Cocoa apps. Porting them should take about as long as it takes to check the "compile as universal binary" checkbox and, well, compiling it. More still of those applications are just GUI front-ends for stuff that exists in Client as well, like FTP servers and Apache.

Good points, yeah I figure it should do me just fine, but it's that bug of knowing that around the corner it's going to be replaced. I'm not too worried about updates since OS X as is for me right now is perfect with Apache's webserver and it's easy gui and remote desktop.

But does anyone have any experience on one? I mainly want to know how noisy it is compared to a Powermac G5. Also, does Applecare cover harddrives that fail in the server?

there's a kit they sell i think that gives you the parts so you don't suffer any delays to swap out things in case you suffer a failure.

I completely agree. My point was that I doubt Apple will put it as a priority until after all the desktops and laptops are powered by Intel chips, which puts an XServe launch late this year at the earliest.
