XP won't boot

A friend as a computer at home that will load and start up, but will not go into windows. it sits at a black screen where it should be saying its loading windows. tried putting in xp cd and reinstalling xp, it gets to scanning hardware and freezes, tryed safe mode, pulled out and switched around ram, switched HDs and it still wont get passed the black screen. Anyone have any ideas?

Might be time to unplug and find some human friends, eh? J/K, had to.

Anyway, download Memtest and run it for a while. I'm guessing you may have bad memory. Also make sure your hardware is seated correctly and none of your cables are loose.
 
lol yeah i suck at the spelling

anyways we cant even get in to windows... so how do you run Memtest?
 
Download, burn, put into computer, run. Click here for download page and instructions.

It also comes as part of UBCD.

You might also think about pulling out every peice of extraneous hardware (sound, NIC, etc) on the off chance they are causing a problem. Video card, RAM, HDD, CDROM should be enough to start with.
 
Pull out any USB devices.

My iAudio X5, when connected, makes XP hang at a blank screen until I pull it.
