Does anybody have any experience with this? What files and settings will the system restore roll back to?

My friend hosed his account by deleting it under user manager then recreated it with the same user name. If he runs system restore will he lose any files he has added since the restore point was created?

I think it will retain any new documents you've created since the restore point you choose, However i don't think it will retian programs or drivers installed since the selected restore point. I would consult the microsoft website.

The restore points don't do anything to files stored or created by you. Mainly it backs up and restores the registry and several confg files.

I've found it to be nearly useless for fixing problems.

I disable it on all macines. I have very rarely found it useful for anything. It also can be used by viruses and malware to hide file. I have a GPO that I assign to our entire organization disabling this "feature".

I forgot to turn system restore off on my old XP file server. Well, I was really drunk one night and going to uninstall something, and I ended up uninstalling my FTP server by accident. It wiped out all the config files and user accounts. 10 minutes later with system restore I was back up and running. That is the only time I've ever used it.

I turn it off though because it's a haven for viruses and spyware.

System Restore deletes downloaded .exe files. That's the only thing I hate about it.

Still good for rolling back bad drivers tho.

I personally benefited from system restore especially when fixing other ppls computer when they install some junk that screw up the OS.

That's the way if should be. Most people will tell you it fails often anyway, so it's rather pointless anyway.

Personally, I've used System Restore dozens of times, because I've fallen into the role of tech janitor in the office. On some machines, like Dell junk, it's virtually useless. OTOH it has come through many times on my homebuilts when someone has screwed them up. It pretty much depends on the circumstances whether it will work for you or not. Although it sometimes fails, I've never had System Restore make things any worse. I'd give it a shot. You'll only lose any recent programs you've downloaded or installed....
