XP Speaker Settings Configuration Issues

I've been having some problems with the speaker settings configuration under Windows XP (Control Panel -> Sound and Audio Devices Properties -> Advanced -> Speaker Setup). Whenever I change the speaker settings, they don't change. For example, when I change it to "No Speaker," I shouldn't be able to hear any sounds, but I still do! Windows XP isn't changing my speaker settings even though I specified a different speaker setup!

I suspect that the Creative drivers for my Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS might have broken the Windows XP speaker setting configuration. Unfortunately, I do not think System Restore will work out here, since I installed the drivers over a month ago. I only noticed this problem recently when I bought some quality Sennheiser headphones to use for my system and went to change the speaker mode (always had it on 5.1 Surround before). I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the sound drivers, but the problem still exists.

I was able to find a way around this problem, which was to go into Creative's Audio HQ and change the speaker settings there, which does indeed change the speaker settings. However, I want to find a solution to this problem, as I may be replacing the Audigy 2 ZS with a higher quality sound card soon (E-MU 1212) and it might not have a program to alter the speaker settings, which would be a problem in my case.

Has anyone encountered such an issue before? Maybe the Creative drivers removed or altered a setting in the XP registry? Or is it something else? :(
 
did you click apply or just ok? i had a problem where the creative drivers would mysteriously change from 5.1 to stereo. after a restart and a setting change it would take the settings for awhile. anyways i eventually reinstalled windows for another reason, and have never had the same problem since. oh everytime you update creative's crappy software the speaker setting revert to stereo i think.
 
I have ran into this same problem as well, I try'd everything and still no go, I'd change it to 5.1 and hit apply. It would save the settings only till I reboot, then it would go back to a 2 speaker set up. So I just would set it up when I started up my computer. Sucked I must say. I never did find out how to fix it. But when I did a fresh install of windows (though not for this problem) it just went away. Now it works fine..

IIRC, there is an option within the creative settings to sync the two settings. They have some sort of voodoo relationship (thanx to creatives awsomeness). Try playing with that. If they are sync'd you should be able to change the windows setting and have it apply.
