Hello there fellow [H]ard|Members,

I have been putting off the installation of XP SP2 for a while now. When it came out, I heard vague rumors of "problems" caused by the new SP, so I delayed getting it.

Any reason why I should or shouldn't go ahead and get it now?

Thanks.

If your system is infected with spyware or viruses, then you will probably have problems.

Otherwise, I've done 13 SP2 installs here in the dorms, with the only problem being that heavy P2P users like myself hit the incomplete TCP limit quite quickly, but that's easily fixed with a patcher program. I don't have the link right now, google it.

Welcome to the forums. :)

There have been many threads posted about this before. If you use the Search Funtion (up there ^^) you will find many threads about wheater to go to SP2 or not. You will also find some problems that the users have had.

I must concur, I have put it all three of my windows machines and several of my clients machines with no issues at all. Go for it.

Sorry, I tried a couple searches and came up with a lot of irrelevant looking posts. Guess I didn't try the right search phrase.

After several more tries, I still cannot find a good thread - could you recommend a search phrase?

Thanks!

I would think "SP2" -- restricted to the OS forum only -- would be more than fine.

well at this point I think it's safe to say this thread has become a good thread on SP2.

On every computer forum it seems there are always about 10 users bitching about how SP2 ruined their computer/deleted all their porn/stole their girlfriend/etc. but the majority of us installed it and have had no problems.

A fresh install of SP2 (i.e. backup, format, install) is the best way, but as long as your system is clean of any infections, the upgrade should go smooth as butter.

Yea a fresh install is always best. There are plenty of guides on splipstreaming SP2 which may be helpful. I always reformat with any major changes for best perforemance and stability.

And there arealways going to be some people out ther that ahve problems with something. The majority will not have any problems at all as long as you are free of any infections liek spyware and stuff as wolrahnaes stated

Well, some of his programs might stop working correctly.

For example, he needs latest divx, latest nero in case he uses them.
There are could be more problems. There are problems. Saying there are no problem, is saying that Microsoft is lying when it issued a long long list with programs 50 at least, that have problems with SP2 and need patches to be issued in order to work properly.

wolrahnaes is right. There is no reason not to install SP2, but soem users may have problems if spyware is present on their PC's and the linmit can be fixed wtihba simple registry edit but here is the patch
