OK, I'm getting quite annoyed by this stupid anomaly or whatever you wish to call it. I've never experienced it before when I just had SP1. However, with a clean format and fresh install I decided to jump the gun and install SP2. Now, certain websites cause my Internet Explorer to close. It's not a crash. It happens on hollywood.com. That one I can name because it just closed on me. Oh yeah, it also closes on divx.com.

HOW do I fix this stupid bug? Quite annoying when I'm surfing the web or doing research or some such.

Yeah, its active X stuff

Quote:

I recently installed SP2 and i like the block pop-up function in the IE6 and the add-on management and stuff

although i mostly use FireFox, i do use IE too.

however, when i use the new IE6 i feel that most of the sites that used to work in IE6 before doesn't seem to work

i know the reason tho.

the sites that don't work are sites that require Active-X plugins

although you can permit to allow the Active-x, it still seems a bit funny.

and i wonder how many general users are going to like this when browsing the web

i know there aren't a lot of English sites that require active-x unless its GAIN or Microsoft

however, i sometimes go to Korean websites and most of there online banking sites, portal sites and online shopping sites require active-x plugins.

has anyone noticed this kind of problems in the new IE6?

lets share.

People bitched so much about IE's security issues over ActiveX and I was surprised. I've used ActiveX with no problems. I do need it for MS and TrendMicro's free virus scanner and some sites. Potential harm can come from ActiveX where porn sites put dialers on your computer and GAIN puts malware/spyware on your computer, etc. But I've already "trained" myself to look out for these. When you go on a site and they give a pop up showing you "You must install this to... blah blah blah...", I just x it out. A lot of idiots (including those that bitches about ActiveX) actually clicked 'yes' instead of 'x' or 'cancel' and you wonder why they cry. IE6 disables these on default to response of the idiots' complaints. But, I went in the settings and put it back on for my sake. Not one problem with viewing any sites. FireFox on the other hand, though I haven't tried out the new versions, caused problems for me viewing websites.

Active X isn't the problem. I set everything to "prompt" for Active X, and the sites still close out of my IE. This is really pissing me off.

Well, I have SP2 nstalled, and I just went to DivX.com without a problem, so it's not endemic to SP2. Have you done a thorough sweep for adware/spyware? That would be my next thought. Let us know if that helps, or if you figure it out yourself.

Yeah, I have Lavasoft's Adaware.

FYI, Adaware non-SE version will miss a lot of spyware. If you don't have the newer SE version, download it, or try Spy Sweeper.

Upgrading can cause problems. It's best if you format it entirely with a new installation updated to SP2 THEN install your drivers. Well, hey, post your hijackthis in the other thread (help me on my theory? post).

Or install the latest drivers for every component you have.

First of all, those sites that ask you to install a little program have a new wrinkle:
There is no way to say no. There is no "close" and the X is greyed out. You have to unplug your cable from the modem or youre gonna get it.

Second of all, the new breed of hijacks and worms are way too nasty to be gotten by my usual SpySweep, Adaware SE 104 V2, Pest Patrol, and Spybot S&D (Aug 11 update), CWS Shredder and mini-removal tool and Stinger.

The guy that makes CWS remover has stopped updating - he cant keep up. Adaware just came out with the VX2 Better Internet removal plugin.

The VX2, which I spent 4 hours getting rid of recently, can shut down your anti-virus prog, shut down Zonealarm, resist deletion even in safe mode and will definitely reinfect if your system restore is turned on. Whats happening with these things is as the AV tries to remove them it freezes the sytem because it cant. I was deleting fouteen files from the recycle bin, and each time they popped back in a second or two later. I had to use delete in Win 98 boot disc in DOS.

I have gotten to the point of just ghosting back my OS, I dont even try to remove this crap anymore.

And third of all, any IE pages that dont open AFTER SP2 means either the popupblocker or some Active-X non compliance either with IE or some browser with IE kernal, or with some plug-in or program that needs it....

Quote from the web again:

"One thing that has solved some errors is disabling IE pop up blocker, or any from third party."

Another solution which most dont like is:

"After my XP SP2 install, I stopped using IE for my HTTP client and Outlook for my e-mail client and now I have no more problems with Active X or embedded scripts in e-mail exploits. My box is about 80% more secure now with those two products eliminated. Otherwise, everything else is working fine."

The fact it works just fine for some is irrelevant, every system is different. That it closes
on divx is a dead giveaway.

You should be able to right click the window on the start bar and select close, worse case you can end the process in task manager.

Sometimes they also give your a window with a greyed out x, inside the window the prompts to install work like this: yes=yes, and no=yes.

Bastiges.

What difference would it make if i installed the drivers before installing SP2?

I haven't thought of that but generally SP2 is an entirely new "patch" so it's best to install SP2 first THEN your drivers or you'd have to "reconfigure" your drivers again just to make it compatible with SP2 in terms of stability.
