Unless there is an easier way for me to be doing this, I have to grab a floppy drive out of another PC each time I reformat to install XP across a RAID 0 array...

IS there any other way to be doing this?

And when I install Vista.. how is the RAID install gonna work there?

I have a P5W-DH if that matters

Install nlite and make a custom xp installation cd with the drivers already installed onto the cd no problems anymore!

why werent newer XP install cds ever produced with updated support for RAID/SATA drivers like Vista apparently is (if I am to believe the poster above me)

You can slipstream the drivers in xp as others have said. For vista you can install them from another source from what I've read. I haven't tried it yet.

Best advice I have is to get yourself an usb floppy drive. Most if not all modern systems will use a usb floppy drive as a normal floppy and you can load the drivers off it. That way you have it for the future if you ever need it. I use mine to load the raid drivers for servers and for the random bios update here and there. Thats it.

I believe the Intel drivers should be included with Vista, but if not, you'll know about a minute into the install when you can't see the RAID array. Vista can see USB thumb drives, so you could put the drivers on there for Vista to access. Just remove the drive after the drivers are loaded so it doesn't think the USB as "C:\" and makes your OS drive "D:\".

though that should be able to be changed with disk management after install anyways... just sayin ;)

So I'm gonna try this nlite thing (I just found an .iso image of WinXPPro w/ SP2... a little better than my SP1 disc) but just wanna confirm one last time.

for XP, the only way to load RAID drivers into an install is either a floppy disc or slipstreamed install disc yes?

vista, on the other hand, allows you to look at USB drives for the RAID drivers

As stated in not so many words and varieties:

XP requires the drivers be integrated on on a floppy.

Vista can work with the drivers integrated, the drivers on a floppy, the drivers on a CD/DVD you can browse, or the drivers on a Flash-RAM device that's recognized as a storage media device at boot time typically meaning a USB thumbdrive but not limited to that - it could be an SD/MemoryStick/etc also as long as the device and the Flash-RAM product can be seen and accessed.

Hope this helps...

I didn't need to provide drivers during any Vista install, not even for my SCSI controller.

Follow this simple logic:

IF (Raid controller Chip release date) > (Your windows CD date)
THEN (need bootdisk for drivers)
ELSE ( 90% chance drivers are integrated)

:p

Oh yeah also, if you do the Vista install from Windows, it will check the net for any updates before running the actual installation, which I think is a very good design.
