Okay, so I have 2 gigs of ddr2 667 memory using XP Pro 32 bit. I do quite a bit of gaming and have some extra Christmas cash laying around. Would an extra gig of memory make a huge difference in the performance of my rig?

Nope.

1gb is really that is needed for most people and 2gb for those that game.
If you want more than 2gb you might as well jump to 4gb and run XP x64 or Vista x64

Get XP x64, then get 8GB RAM, which can nowadays be had for literally like $120 to $150. Who would have thought that such was possible even 3 years ago?

XP64 = Server 2003 with a pretty face.

Not recommended for gamers.

I used to think my 2gb was enough until I upgraded to x64 and went to 5gb and turned off page file... It's so nice being able to alt tab out of Crysis in to Photoshop without any delay... NEVER would have been able to do that before.

Personally with just XP 32 bit I'd try for 3GB, 2x1gb and 2x512mb on the cheap maybe?

And why do you say not recommended for gamers? From what I hear, the codebase of server 2k3 is admittedly much better than the codebase for XP...which is why it was used as a starting point for xp64 and vista. I have also seen posts on this forum showing server 2k3 performing better in games than XP, all other things being equal. From what I hear the thread scheduling, memory management, and TCP/IP stack of server 2k3 are all superior to XP. However, I agree that a 64 bit OS should not be recommended for gaming because the additional memory is not needed and the larger words will just slow things down (and waste ram) at no benefit.
