Xp Pro 64 bit

I'm not sure you can download XP 64 legally since it was largely offered only to OEM's. You can, however, download Vista from the Windows Marketplace here.

There are no price breaks from Microsoft $319.95 for this version and you can get the same one from Newegg for $279.

The main difference between the Newegg and Microsoft copies of Vista is the speed of delivery. MS allows for a digital download whereas the Egg has to ship it to you. I would buy the OEM edition for less and wait for it to arrive.

If you happen to attend a reasonably big college you can probably get a copy for O($10)..

The OP is asking about XP Pro x64 - where did you folks suddenly read Vista x64 into this, any edition? Eh?

We know you can't buy it and download it, that's a given but I fail to see how Vista got into this so quick considering it was never an option in the first place...

Anyway, to simply answer the question posed by the OP: you can't "buy and download" XP Pro x64, sorry. You can, however, buy it brand new from some online retailers for less than any other operating system Microsoft sells on the market today, typically in the $80 range for the full version (not an upgrade) of XP Pro x64.

If you have a technet subscription, you can download just about any MS software you'd like.

Newegg does have XP 64-bit, but it's not for download. You may also be able to download it from MSDN. University students may also be able to get it from MSDNAA. I'm a little suprised that someone would be looking for the XP x64 edition, since it's has flaky drivers and compatibility issues. XP 32-bit or, if you want to stay with x64, Vista 64-bit, are better choices.

Eh, I've had no problems with XP x64 on several systems.. Especially now that Vista is out.

Agreed. I have used both 64 and 32 bit versions of XP and Vista extensively. Vista x64 has far better support than XP x64

<hint, hint: if you can find drivers for a piece of hardware for Vista x64, those drivers will work with XP x64... hint, hint>

Been telling people this for what, well over 2 years now, people still don't get it. Yes, I realize Vista is the new kid on the block, but but but... XP x64 still runs circles around it in terms of desktop performance (aka "the experience") and most other things too, even with SuperFetch at work and other aspects that make Vista x64 work so well.

Someday soon I'll sit down, image my primary drive, and do a run of benchmarks comparing XP x64 SP2 against Vista x64 using the same drivers across the board (at least version-wise) and see what turns up. Somehow, I'm fairly confident XP x64 will come out ahead...

Thanks for the tip! I currently have one machine running XP x64 that I can't print from. I will try the Vista x64 driver for my LaserJet 1320 and see if it works.

Laserjet 1320, you say? XP x64 driver, which is actually Windows Server 2003 x64 at its heart, therefore that's the driver you should be using? There ya go... new version released on May 5th, just 3 weeks ago...

If more people would come to the realization that XP x64 = Windows Server 2003 x64 then they'd have a much easier time tracking down drivers. ;)

Well thanks to you that's atleast one more person "in the know"

This is actually very good news for me since I have like 10 XP x64 licences that I haven't used becuase of driver issues. I couldn't sell them becuase they're from my technet subscription, but now I can actually put them to use.

Bleh, I would say toss one my way but but but... I have a bunch of XP x64 VLKs so, it's not an issue... ;)

Been running XP x64 since day one and dealing with the assumptions by the majority that "oh the driver support sucks" - and for a very brief period of time at the introduction of XP x64 that was true, I have to admit that. But it lasted just a few weeks, and then real driver support appeared by name brand hardware manufacturers and I never thought twice about it again.

The drivers have been there, as long as you're not one to buy cheap shit hardware. Intel has led the charge by providing 64 bit chipset, graphics, and network adapter drivers since day one, HP has provided printer drivers (just takes time to find them at HP's screwy damned website sometimes), ATI/Nvidia had drivers years ago but hid them (seriously), and most other name brand manufacturers have "silently" supported XP x64 for many years as well.

It's nice to see people finally realizing the power XP x64 has to make their every day computing experience that much snappier, but it's not so nice to see it overshadowed by Vista x64. But to each their own... I'll be running XP x64 for years to come.
