Im working on a budget upgrade and would like to use a copy of XP SP2 oem that I bought about 2 years ago. Now this upgrade consists of new MB, CPU, RAM, GPU, and HDD and Im thinking XP wont let me install it with the same serial because its basically a new computer. Im just hoping because XP is getting old they dont check it like they used to.

Anyone tried this and get it to work? Or do I have to shell out for a new OS?

You can't do this with an OEM serial, as they're tied to the first machine they're installed on.

As long as it's not installed on another machine, you likely won't have any problems. You'll probably have to call Microsoft, but that takes all of about five minutes and is pretty painless.

Of course, technically (according to the EULA) you shouldn't do so, as it violates the agreement.....

I have transferred two XP Pro OEM licenses from one computer to another. (once on the first due to hardware crapping out and twice on the second due to upgrades ). Both went okay without a hitch and I'm proud to say that I activated them over the internet without having to phone Microsoft.

There's nothing to worry about.

that I activated them over the internet without having to phone Microsoft.

Worked for me as well after a desktop upgrade. It seems that after a certain period of time the serial is "released" from that hardware profile. Maybe someone can shed some light on this?

Maybe this is prohibited by the license agreement but unless you are trying to excessively activate using the same CD key there is going to be no problem calling in and activating XP. They ask you a few questions and you just have to answer them "right."
