XP networking mystery. Internet connectivity, but not web pages

So I can ping outside sites just fine. I can go to local html pages just fine. but IE and firefox will not bring up any outside web pages.

Things I've tried:

-Reset winsock catalog(netsh)
-Reset TCP/IP(netsh)
-No firewalls on

and tried it in safe mode with networking, still no go. any ideas besides windows repair and complete reinstall?

oh and no spyware detected. im not so sure there didn't used to be spyware there though. this was handed off to me.

edit: argh ok, it works here in my workspace. but not there(different site). Hmm

Double check DNS settings.


Go into a dos box (Start-->Run--> type CMD)
and ping 4.2.2.4 (Verizon's public DNS servers)
Get a reply? You've got connectivity.
Now Ping Google.com
Get a Reply? Then you should be able to bring up webpages fine.
Get "unknown host"? Double check DNS
