I tried doing a search to fiind out if anyone else has had similar problems, but no luck there.

Here is the problem, when i first start up the computer everything boots up fine, runes through the BIOS and then it goes to start windows and nothing happens, just a blank screen, hard drives not truning nothing.

I hit the reset button, it boots up again, but this time it dumps me into a windows touble shooting screen. Where I have the option to normally start windows, plus the start with last know good config, plus the myriad of safe modes, if I let the time run down it will just go to a blank screen, if I hit start windows normally it loads windows, with out a problem and runs just fine. Never seen anything like it.

I have been trying to figure out what I did exactly to cause this, a few days go the I fired up and the mouse and keyboard would not work, I rebooted and all was fine, then this started happening. I am not even sure how to trouble shoot this.

Anyone out there have this happen to them before? or have any ideas of what might cause it? I did do a windows update in teh middle of last week, but it worked fine after that. Is there a list somewher ein XP of the updates syouhave done? I just looked the the add/remove programs and there is nothing there. The last one had to do with Microsoft Frame something or other.

This is frutrating and worry some and the same time. Any help is much appreciated

Thanks in Advance

Maybe a file system problem. Boot up into safe mode or into regular Windows and do "chkdsk c: /f", reboot, and see if that fixes any files.

Just tried you suggestion Z-lite, tried it in safe mode and normal mode. Window won't let me use the /f switch. Says the drive is locked and being used by another application. Tried the do it at start up but that did not work either. Ugggh.. this is driving me crazy, I suspect it might have to Microsoft Framework 1.0? update I let windows do. It would not surprise me, every time I update XP I get some kind of a problem. I am not sur eif they are fixing it or breaking it.

Oh well it might be something I did too. Just wish I could figure out how to diagnos this, its driving me crazy. The next step is to start from scratch agin, don't really want to do that..

Any other ideas, anyone ever even hear of such a thing like is happening here.

Thanks again...

That exact problem has happened to me in the past.

My solution:
I swapped in a blank hard drive and installed windows on it to check if the problem was a hardware problem or not. I installed the new hard drive on a different IDE channel, it worked.

After some phrenaegling I figured out that my problem was being caused by my DVD-Rom drive. When it is plugged in, it won't boot, when it is unplugged, no problems. After removing the dvd drive I noticed a clinking noise inside like some small piece broke off in there. The drive still works, but only intermittently and only after playing around with the IDE channels.

So try unplugging your IDE devices and see what happens, you may be surprised, I sure as hell was.
