XP down, possibly McAfee, cant fix!

my friends mom has a few-years-old xp computer that stopped working right about the McAfee bad update. i cant tell for sure if thats the culprit though. problems were the taskbar didnt show up and the internet didnt work. the taskbar was a pretty easy fix, just right clicked down there and told it to show quicklaunch and the whole taskbar popped up. i think it was just hidden somehow.

the other problem is much more complex. the internet and usb/sd cards arent working, so i cant download or in any way transfer files for any fixes. i decided to just download an iso of XP on my desktop and do a complete reformat with her key on the bottom of the laptop, but before i could do any of that i wanted to back up her my documents folder. i found that i couldnt even drag and drop files. right click and send to> wasnt working either. basically i couldnt find any way to back up her files. has anyone encountered anyone like this before, or do you have any suggestions?
 
Pull the drive out and connect it to your computer (make sure you have a good anti-virus running and updated, lol), then drag her files over. If you get shit about permissions, take ownership of the files. Google for instructions on how to disassemble the laptop based on the model #.

thanks for the suggestion. unfortunately its a laptop IDE drive, and i only have desktop IDE and SATA in my desktop. i just bought a bgears b-envi last night, and that has a built-in laptop IDE hotswap bay, so if i cant figure it out before it gets here then i can hopefully stick it in there and get the files off it. wont be here for 5-7 days though... any other suggestions?
 
lol. well to be more specific she's in a sorority and this is her house mom. so just some random OLD lady. im not really into that, but i could put in a good word for you... ;) and actually ive gotten dozens of free meals from her sorority so i dont really mind helping out a little. :D
