For some reason my Sidewinder controller is not supported under XP. Does anyone have a solution for this of any kind? Why would Microsoft not keep their items up to date?

AFAIK there's no way around it. MS stopped supporting the older controllers so you'll buy the new ones. Trust me, I'm pissed about it too as I have 3 old sidewinder controllers that will never be fully functional again.

Hopefully there's someone around here that could prove me wrong.
 
That just sucks. That is one of the most retarded things I've ever come by!!! I just bought this Baseball game, found this controller for cheap, guess I know why now.
 
Nevermind, doesn't matter in the end cause EA's game doesn't work with joysticks. If they only had Customer support and perhaps even a PATCH!!!

Umm..ive been using a sidewinder under XP for quite some time now and no problems

go under joysticks or whatever it is and hit add. go down the list and its there.

for some reason, sometimes XP will not add it itself, you have to do it

There were many many models in the Sidewinder series. I think they're still using the name, actually.

But what you suggested will probably work assuming it's not USB.
 
I dont think the serial Sidewinders work, that is why I had to get a USB one a while back. I know the USB works just fine, that is how I play my emulation games.
 
This one is USB, I put it in and all that. Guess I'm not totally sure if it works or not cause MVP Baseball doesn't support it. But the website says teh drivers are for 95 and 98 only!!!

This is the kind of bullshit that needs to be erased from these forums, or prevented from ever being posted. Game ports work just fine in XP. I have the original Sidewinder gamepad, connected via gameport on my work machine running XP, with NO drivers installed. It works just fine.

Me too. I just plug it in, go to joystick option in control panel and it magically appears.
 
Start->control panel->Game Controllers.
Select "add", scroll down to "Microsoft Sidewinder (auto detect)". Click OK.

If that doesn't work, add it as a standard joystick. XP works like gravy with the Gameport, as well as USB.
 
I did what you guys said, and it worked!!! I just assumed I needed to install software so I went straight too the Microsoft site where it says not compatiable with XP. Now if any of you can help me with this Baseball problem that would be amazing!!! EA has a fix on their site but I can not understand how too do it or it just seems not to work for me.

why can't you use the fix on their site? Is it a patch, or a set of instructions on how to set up the joystick?
 
It's some kind of weird instruction too modify the Controller.cfg file, very unclear, or I just don't know what I am doing.
 
I have a Ver 1 Force Feedback Pro stick i got working using the trick to add "Sidewiender (Auto Detect)" trick. Why use an old joystick like that? Simply because it tracks better and holds the true calibration, unlike the logitech one i bougt a year ago that kept having its 3rd (Twist) axis go screwy and super sensitive.

Interesting.....I was wondering about XP and the Sidewinder gamepad myself. Thanks for the info. and this was good reading. I downloaded the latest driver and was going to install, but nevermind now. Actually, I don't have any games installed on my XP machine that require or are better with a gamepad yet, but will keep this for future reference. Heck, I don't even have a gamepad port.....it didn't come with the OEM Audigy2.

ah...probably something like, Open it with Notepad, find a certain line, and change one of the values? Yeah, those can get confusing sometimes.
Modifying config files is pretty much all you DO in Linux;)
