XP-90, IBM mobo installation

Hello,

I am installing the XP-90 into my IBM Pentium4. The socket says "mPGA478B".

I took of the OEM heatsink. Here is a picture:

The heatsink was attached by a pair of "floppy" brackets, that themselves are attached to an aluminum square (that matches the width and height of the black plastic RM that came with my XP-90.

Do I need to remove the aluminum square (attached by four screws in its corners), and replace it with the black plastic RM? (There also seems to be a backplate.)
There seems to be chips and circuitry tucked below the aluminum square.
I don't see how the black-plastic RM could be attached.

basically the black plastic piece you speak of is attached noramlly from the bottom of the board with screws and/ or plastic tabs,

you may want to try to find a mounting bracked for the xp 90, though cause the intel ones arnt that cheap...

for the retention bracket and the thermalright bracket for 775 which usually works 478 boards its $5 + shipping.

personally id go with the stock since the thermalright uses a backplate, though you dont have to use that backplate (it might work without it havent tried it)

on a side note if you want to pay shipping pm me, ive got a thermalright bracket you can have,its been used once, if i can find it

oh and in my opinion from that picture it looks like its the same basic size and clearance as a standard bracket it just had a unstandard heatsink

fyi, the existing OEM bracket shown in the picture, has a backplate.

I don't think I could use the existing / stock bracket, since it does not have the "four post" design that seems to be the standard for P4 478s (and provides the holes for the XP-90 to hook into). (You are correct that the height x width is the same.)

My options (I think) are:
(a) get a standard bracket (RM) with holes in the corners (to accept the screws, to attach the backplate; means taking out the motherboard), or
(b) use the original heatsink with its non-standard bottom to fit the existing non-standard bracket (the HS is a bit cheap looking...)

If I get a new bracket/RM, it needs to have some height off the mobo to clear some circuits. The one on the Intel Store site seems a little low. Any experience with this? Are all "standard" 478 brackets a certain distance above the mobo?

if you were to use the thermalright you need a little bit of tape/insulation possibly depending on the under side. (it comes with a plastic piece that insulates most of it)
both that and the stock stand off a little bit (the thermalright much more so becuase its a simpler design and only where the screw attach touches the pcb) the stock also only touches the pcb where the screws/clips attach and the rest is raised enough to clear some things it anything under it is 1/8" (just a guess here looking at a bracket attached to a mobo) then it wont touch it.
theres no backplate for the stock rm its just screws or clips depending on which one you get.
