Wow this thing rocks, I had the the stock LGA775 HSF with a P4630 and it was usually at 70-83 degrees celcius, but this thing, wow, 35-45 degrees celcius. Time for a little OC'ing. :D
For those that are wondering I have a 92mm Panaflo FBA09A12H-1BX on it.

I've heard that it is a good idea to OC or up the voltage a little on the XP-90C in order to activate the heatpipes which will result in only more low temperature goodness. :p

running the same setup (xp-90 + panaflo h1bx) and it's pretty sweet. the fan is a tad bit noisy but i needed some extra displacement to make myself feel better about not getting the xp-90c.

Yes and no, it works for systems that can't already activate it. 38C (about 100F) is warm enough to get the balls rolling, and he tops that already

I bought the XP-90C for my 4400+ it's a fantastic cooler. I'm not sure how it compared to the stock cooler, but I did test it out on my old P4 and it lowered temps by 11C.

I'm torn between the XP-90-C and the XP-120. By and large, the XP-120 is still considered superior even though it isn't all-copper, right?

H

I think that the xp-90c, is better than the xp-120. I am almost positive. If I am wrong please correct me.

I believe TheBlueChanell is right, although it weighs more than the XP-120, although the XP-120 is larger but cheaper, so its up to you.

Hmm, that conflicts with what I've heard a few people say off-hand. I had decided to go with the XP-120 over the 90-C based on these comments. So, well, now you've gotten me actually doing the research. Now, this is only one (so far), but this review found the XP-120 came out on top.

Linkage

With noise at less than 35db:
XP-120: 38c
XP-90c: 42c

With noise at 61db:
XP-120: 35c (59db)
XP-90-C: 36c (61db)

I'm not saying this is definitive. This is just all I have found so far. But, from that, it looks like the XP-90-C really only competes with the XP-120 with super-high-speed fans. But, with the XP-120, you can get cool *and* quiet.

I'll keep looking though and post anything contradictory.

I have the XP120, it's really quiet for it's size, I haven't OC'd yet but It sounds tempting now that I know how much it can dissipate in terms of heat. I'd def. recommend getting this thing, kicks ass.

Well, I said I'd post contradictory evidence. Here's one where the 90-C comes out on top pretty clearly.

I like my xp-120. I've gotten rid of my rediculous paranoa of high temperatures and just got the xp-120 along with a silent fan. I couldn't be happier!

I wanna test out this "activate heatpipe" thing. :)

Thats mainly for the a64's that don't produce alot of heat @ stock. For the Prescotts, it's a no brainer.

Here's a snippet from MadShrimps review. It's kinda hard to make a direct comparison when they use differnet size fans, but look at the 5th line from bottom, the xp-120 with the tian fan @50%, and the xp-90 right above it. Both are good coolers, but being able to use a higher cfm fan w/less noise seems like a plus. Add in the extra mb cooling (power mosfets, ram, etc) and the xp-120 is better than the xp-90c, IMHO

Agreed. Gotta love the XP-120.

Seems sorta odd: Add voltage to increase heat so that the heatpipes get hot, so that they can remove the heat that didn't exist until you upped the voltage so that it would be better at removing the heat that wasn't yet a problem. And, once the heatpipes are hot, and begin flowing better, won't they cool the CPU back down? Leaving you right back where you started. . . needing more heat to get the cooler to remove heat better?

Seems counter-intuitive and contradictory to me.

I too own an XP-90, I bought it after having already purchased a Zalman CPNS7700-Cu and reading articles and forum posts that said the XP-90 was superior. I sold the Zalman and shipped it the day I got my XP-90, turns out that the CPNS kept my CPU cooler by 2°C than does my XP-90. YMMV.

I went with the XP-90 instead of the XP-120 because of the capacitors around my CPU socket (MSI K8N Neo2 Platimum - 7025).

yeah, its a cpu cooler. I have one and its the best heatsink I've ever had. I have been buying thermalright heatsinks since my slk-800, I think their real "cool". I also like the way my ddr gets a nice blow from the overhanging fan. Can't forget to blow your sticks!

Found my limit on stock HSF so I'll be upgrading to the XP90C int he next few days, whenever it comes from Newegg.

Any recommendations on thermal paste? (i'll be searching and reading on this anyways, but coming back to one thread to get some recommendations would be nice.

Maybe they did that to lower load temperatures? Say for instance, you idle at a temperature where the heatpipes are yet to operate, but when you hit a load, the cpu temperature increases and thus the heatpipes start to flow. That'll keep your load temp closer to your idle temperature wouldn't it?

I think the idea of increasing voltage to get it cooler is pretty retarded. Once the heatpipes turn on, the cpu temp drops down, heatpipes deactivate, cpu heats up, etc. To me it just sounds like your causing unneccessary stress on the cpu.

Yeah I used AS5 and it works great. I believe Xoxide or SVC would probably have it for the cheapest.

So where is the best price on a Xp120?

Jab-tech has it for $47.95, which was the cheapest froogle result from names I trusted.
Or you can get it on E-bay for $77.99 + $3.42 required insurance
