Any informed oppinions on whether or not we'll see an XP CPU rated greater than 3200+? I have a mostly stable 2500+ OC'ed to 3200+, which is fine for now but I'd really like to update it one day to like a 3800+ sempron. Think we'll see such a thing?
 
I'd say probably not. In order to get 2.5Ghz+ stable (especially for the non-OCing general public) would take 1.7V or greater. That's a definite no-no in terms of smart spending. Plus this eats away at the mobile procs that could be used in laptops.

And since Semprons are coming into full swing, AMD has no reason to release more expensive XP chips when a $150+ S754 chip will be easily better.

A "maybe" for the general public would be the "3600+" (2.1 = 3000+, 2.2 = 3200+, so 2.4 = 3600+); 2.4Ghz @ 1.65Vcore. But, again, why do that? When the S754 is now the ultimate value/power investment.
 
Get you one of the mobile XP's if your motherboard will support 200FSB. That should be good for 2.4ghz-2.5ghz easily.
 
Wait, so when I upgrade my sn45g from the 2500+ I currently have in it, I should get a mobile instead of a 3200+?

Not necessarily. Mobile processors are nice because their multipliers are unlocked, meaning higher overclocks are (theoretically) possible/easier. However they are a bit more expensive so if you don't plan on overclocking, you would really have little use for a mobile proc. Of course, if you were interested in overclocking you obviously wouldn't be upgrading from a 2500+ to a 3200+ : ). I have my 2500+ OC'ed to 3200+ (2.2GHz) right now. It's a little unstable, I crash once every week or so, but for the money I saved and the performance I'm getting, I'm quite pleased.

The AMD Athlon XP is an End of Life product. The Sempron has replaced it as a value CPU targeted at the Celeron.

Consensus over at the AMD corporate processor support forum is NOPE..

They aren't making any more Barton cores...going with the T-bred & Thorton Semprons as the last gasp in the socket A lineup...

Wait wait, I'm sorry my question was supposed to be "Will AMD be making higher rated 32 bit chips", not just specifically the XP's. My mobo has Sempron support (with a BIOS upgrade).

So does this mean I have hope? It's possible that we'll see like a 3800 or 4200 sempron?

Actually, I *do* want to OC. My 2500+ just isn't giving me the results I want, although I admit I haven't put enough time into it yet. I'm moderately sure it's from one of the not-so-great batches, OC-wise. Again, mucho research needed, & not enough hours in the day.

Maybe, depending on consumer demand, it's been discussed on the offiacial amd processor support forum.
No more XP's though. Sempron socket A is the last bastion I'm afraid.

The thing you have to realize about Semprons is that their model number ratings are not based the same as the Athlon XP. A 1.667GHz Athlon XP is rated at 2000+, while a 1.667GHz Sempron is rated at 2400+. AMD will make Semprons to compete with what ever Intel releases on the Celeron line. If there is a 3.8GHz Celeron, there will be a 3800+ Sempron. What clock speed it will be over the current Barton 3200+ could be anyones guess. But I will tell you that they will be socket 754 not Socket A.
