XP 32 or 64?

I'm running an E8400 just at 3.0 Ghz right now. I mainly use my computer for Cubase recording and production. The main limiting factor in Cubase is the CPU and I'm wondering if 64-bit XP is supposed to utilize the CPU better in general, or just enable the CPU to work more efficiently with larger quantities of memory?

I'm running XP 32 right now. I only have 2 gigs of DDR2 800 presently but this is because I'm not concerned about memory. Since I'm not, and Cubase doesn't need it, would XP 64 be worthwhile? Cubase is a clock-cycle hog mainly so if there's some chance of CPU resources being managed better by XP 64 overall, it might be good to upgrade.

if you have no plans on going over 4gb of RAM (including your video card), there's no reason to go 64-bit. You also have to ask yourself, will Cubase work on 64-bit XP? 64-bit XP is essentially Windows Server 2003, not XP 32-bit.

Of the choices, XP Pro x64 (which is more accurately named Windows Workstation 2003 x64 I say) would be light years ahead of XP Pro 32 bit running Cubase with that CPU, and yes, having as much RAM as your machine can support will make a huge gigantic difference in how your production goes.

Because of a lot of the mid-to-high end audio production software still favoring XP over Vista (because of DirectSound being ripped out of Vista and other considerations), if you're serious about audio production I strongly suggest you keep XP Pro x64 in mind. It's hella cheap too, you can find it online for under $50 these days, brand new OEM System Builder copies - XP Pro x64 was never a retail product on store shelves.

Amazing OS, it really is... too bad the majority of people never really got to know it that well like some of us did (and still do)...
