I ran the followfreeman timedemo in Half Life 2.

XP-M @ 2.4 (166x14)
9800 Pro
768mb @ 166
Integrated Sound

To my surprise, I get 31fps in all resolutions, even 1600x1200. Is my cpu so bad so as to bottleneck the video card so badly?

its your FSB more than raw CPU speed, if you had 2.4ghz but with something like 240x10 it would be much better

and no it shouldnt be severly bottlenecked anyway

and ill trade you my unlocked 2500barton if that mobile isnt cutting it ;) :p (assuming you got a 35w)

Interesting indeed. I wouldn't consider it a FSB or even a CPU issue, because even at 1600x1200, your videocard will bow to Half Life 2.

For starters, are you using the the demo to record the frames? Can you notice a visable difference when you go through at 1024x768 and when you go through at 1600x1200? What are your graphical settings for this demo?

Most likely, the demo is reporting incorrect FPS. Using FRAPS can usually provide correct readouts. If this is not the case, I'm not quite sure what the issue could be.

When's the last time you installed chipset drivers or more specifically AGP GART drivers?

omfg im sooooooooooooooo tired of replying to the SAME problem again and again and again...people need to read the forums even when they DO NOT have problems :p

/rant

anyway, i'm pretty sure there's a vsync setting in HL2 somewhere....go looking for it in video and turn it off. If that's not the issue, well I can't think of anything that would cause that at all other than vsync to be perfectly honest. If it's not vsync, then I'm stumped.

*Ping Pong Ping Pong*

Sounds like the likely culprit.

The VIA 4-in-1s? After I got my Radeon I installed the latest ones. I'll try it again though.

Yep, I have the latest Via4-in1 drivers. Same damn problem. The framerates are EXACTLY the same in 1600x1200 and 1280x960 and 1024x768 (using fraps for measurement). Even though it doesn't dip below 25 in any of them, I would much rather have a consistent framerate above 40 (which is what I had hoped in 1280x960).

I've heard that ac97 integrated audio may cause problems. The game sounds fine and all. Framerate improves marginally with Low audio rather than High.

Isn't an xp-m at 2.4ghz pretty damn fast? There's plenty of free ram.

I'm running 1 stick of 256 pc2100 and 1 stick of 512 pc2700. Both running at 166mhz. I think the generic pc2100 stick is ocing fine. I haven't seen any artifacts or had any crashes. When I run the 512 stick alone the game doesn't run smoothly as my system runs out of free memory.

Are we stumped or are we stumped?

Umm...did you try "fps_max 999"? If somehow your HL2 got to be set at "fps_max 31" that could definitely be causing a problem...

Also, check your refresh rates on your monitor, and make sure they're set as high as the monitor will let you.

That has to be the strangest problem yet....do all ur games do this or just HL2? If just HL2, email valve and ask :)

The framerate was 31 in that demo. In many others and during gameplay it goes over 31.

Don't bother e-mailing them, they don't respond to any problem. I've been waiting for a total of two... maybe three months for them to resolve a simple problem.

"What about e-mailing multiple times?" You may ask,
"Is five times enough?" I shall respond
