if i go air cooling, i will be choosing between the xp-90 (or xp-90c? worth it or no?), or the xp-120. first of all, is the performance difference much? i know the xp-120 can run quieter while making cpu temp slightly lower, at least i think so..

but most importantly, will the xp-120 even work with my DFI LANPARTY nF4 SLI-DR board? on the thermalright.com site, they say the following:

LANPARTY UT nF4 : First PCI-e slot blocked by Heatpiples
LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D : First PCI-e slot blocked by Heatpiples
LAN PARTY UT nF3 250Gb : Okay

i doubt itd be compatible w/o any issues.

the performance diff betweent he XP-90 and XP-90C is next to nothing... not worth the money.

i dont think the performance diff between XP-90 and XP-120 are that diff either. i say save the money and get the XP-90.

yah, xp-90 is 25 bucks @ svc.com :) SWEET and the xp-90c and 120 really isnt worth it..well the xp-90c isnt worth it, the xp120 can consume a 120mm fan and be quieter..

The XP-120 will fit on the board with no problem except you can't use high ram (with like LEDs and stuff but most normal ram fits) and you can't use your first PCI-E slot (Not the one for the videocard, the one closest to the CPU)

I would highly recommend it, sure it costs a bit more but you can get the same performace (or better) for a LOT less noise.

The XP-90 is good enough, but we wouldn't be enthusiasts if we always settle for good enough would we? :D But being 100% serious, the XP-90 would be good but if your concerened about noise and want to overclock at the same time I recommend the XP-120.

hm.. what about the Thermaltake BigTyphoon.. i hear its better than the xp-120?
yea... its TT's new, 'quieter' product line.

the secret to the BigTyphoon's ability to surpass the XP-120 is that the BigTyphoon is so loud, itll make you deaf.

k then hahaha. if i got the xp-120, it will block one pci-e slot.. could i still do sli video cards with it? also, what fans do you recommend for the xp-120? a panaflo? or is there a good one that has blue led's?

As for the fan, Logisys makes a good 120mm blue LED fan, and I beleave Coolermaster also has one...mine you they won't be the quietest. Nexus makes a orange 120mm fan thats THE best for being quiet but it's orange :p
Coolermaster also makes a fan thats UV sensitive (120mm) and it's fairly quiet.

If you want to know more about a fan post it here..I'll see if I know anything about it.

if i got the xp-120, would a 120mm Panaflo M1A Fan be good? according to frozencpu.com, 86.5cpm but only 35db..

the 120 isnt worth it. get the 90. there might be a 1 degree C diff, and youre using up far less space. just undervolt the 92mm Panaflo.

btw, 35dBA is pretty loud.

but i thought the xp-120 can be quieter with same cooling as xp-90..

also, i have a fan controller, i could undervolt the 120mm fan..

if you undervolt a 92mm Panaflo, its not gonna matter. its gonna be silent either way. you could even buy a fanbus.

technically, yes, a 120mm is quieter than a 92mm, but when theyre undervolted, theyre each nearly silent, so it doesnt matter.

and it will be *near* equivalent cooling, even with the 92mm undervolted?

and if i used the 92mm, which one should i get? panaflo _____...

Panaflo is always a good choice, I like them very much. Vantec Stealth 120s work well with this heat sink, too. I have two boxes with the XP-120 and Vantec Stealth 120mm fan (on DFI nf4 boards, too). They are very quiet.

[edit] Something else to consider about the 120mm fan is that it will blow a lot of air over the PWM area and memory, as the XP-120 overhangs these parts of the motherboard on the DFI. [/edit]

With an XP 120 on my DFI Ultra-D i have no problems. I picked up a cheap 120mm fan made by dynex at best buy and get load temps of 43c with 1.6v on my 3700. It would run at 38c with my 3000 at 1.52v.

The best things about the 120mm fan is the fact that it can cool other components around the CPU at lower rpm's with the same cfm asa 92mm or 80mm which means less noise.

if you were going to put active cooling on your ram would the xp-120 work just as good for this?

exactly so depending on ur needs, the xp120 IS worth it ;)

XP-120 is great if your motherboard can handle it (it's big). I have the regular XP-90 and I my overclocked A64 3200+ winnie idles at 28, load is about 37. The XP-90C isn't that much better, unless you have some sort of wicked airflow design in your case, otherwise save the money and get an XP-90.

EDIT: Added the XP-90C part, the copper design doesn't help as much as the price difference would suggest.

:p ;)

arent the XP-120 and SL-120 the same size just the Sl-120 has the middle part missing so how will it fit everything?

the SI is higher up, so that everything will fit in. the XP-120 is much lower, and blocks things sometimes.

its higher up and clears all the mobo components.....and why else would thermalright put out another product juss like the xp120 if it wasnt compatible with all

I have an XP-120 and DFI LANPARTY UT ultra-d board and the 1st pci-e slot IS blocked by the heatpipes but not the PCI 16X video one I just had a little trouble putting my ram in but I got it without much problem.
