Ive had a G35 for a while now and finally wizened up to stereo headphones. I was able to pick up some corsair HS1ANAs on the cheap ($40 from amazon) and am looking for a decent sound card to run them with (my internal realtek controller blows)

solely for gaming. anything else Ill listen to/watch on real speakers, or my home theater.

I dont plan on using anything more than stereo config, and want to be able to boost the volume a bit more. Max volume on this headset with the onboard is fairly low.

Will the xonar DG suit my needs, or should I go a bit higher end? Any other recommendations? Im hoping to keep it fairly cheap


And any thoughts on picking up the PC350s over the corsair set I got?
 
Xonar DG has a headphone amp in case the G35 needs volume to be driven well. And the Dolby Headphone feature gives really good directional sound. It sounds a little bit like it's in your head if you stop to pay attention, but when you're gaming you naturally know where sounds are coming from, and it works great. It works well for movies too. Honestly for ~$30 I'd say go for it, I used to have one and it made my ATH-AD500 sound really good.

I haven't had any sound cards that are much better than the DG, so you may benefit from something better like the DS or DX. Someone else will have to help you with that.
 
pulled the trigger. So whats the deal with dolby headphone? worth it or a gimmick?
 
Totally worth it. Very effective at mapping the sounds - just make sure you set it up for 6 channel sound, set the game to 5.1 sound, and then enable Dolby Headphone in the Asus control panel. I like DH-2, but you can decide what you prefer.

It is all personal preference. I do not like it, as it degrades SQ and sounds a little unnatural to me. But that is just me. Many like it, many do not.
 
Would I notice much of a difference going from my onboard realtek to a xonar dg with G35 headphones?

I'd say yes, especially if you are gaming. The addition of Dolby Headphone makes a huge difference in games, and for $30 you can't really go wrong.

The G35 has a built-in chipset, hence it being USB. Its sound quality is independent of any other factors in your system, and you will not have any benefit. Same as optical/coaxial S/PDIF.

hah yeah, just looked and the G35 is USB. So sound card wont matter a lick since it is being completely bypassed.
 
Doh. Didn't see that - when someone says headphones, I assume normal headphones, and reserve headset for headphones that include a soundcard. People need to stop treating the two as interchangeable.

well you are actually incorrect still lol. Headphones are what they are, a headset is headphones with a mic attached. Has nothing to do with a "soundcard" included.

Technically true, but if you google for "headset" most of what you find will be USB headsets, so that has more or less become the practical meaning.
 
Any way to get a bit more bass out of this card, or is it my headset (corsair HS1ANA) thats holding me back?
