Ok. I upgraded (using rpm -U) xmms and xmms-devel to the latest version to get mp3 support as root. It went without a hitch, and as root, the prog runs fine. However, if I log in with my user account and goto "run application" (or just type xmms from a terminal) I get the old version(edit: It says its the new version...), which dosent work right at all. If I su to root, it brings up the right version...

OK, run as the user, it plays no sound, runs through the song at about 4x speed, shows something on the visualizer, and then spits out a .wav (which is empty) of the same name to my home directory.

as root it works as advertised...

I commented on your other XMMS thread as well. i use rpm -u only as a last resort. things like xmms dont satisfy dependencies, so for that I'd just just remove the package altogether. To fix the no-mp3 support thing in RH 8/9/Fedora I've just rpm -e xmms-xxx and following the instructions on the XMMS site for installing fresh. It really saves you a lot of hassle
