XFX Radeon DoubleD-7970 GHz black screen crashing

Hello,

I've been looking around the internets for this problem and while some people seem to have experienced it there wasn't a working solution to be found.

So here I am, begging for help, after having exhausted every possible option I could think of.

My system specs are as follows:

Processor : Core i5 2500k (@ ~4200Mhz)
Motherboard : Asus P8p67
RAM: 2x Corsair MSX3 1600 DDR3 (4GB)
PSU: Corsair hx650
GPU: XFX AMD Radeon HD 7970 GHz DD Edition, 3GB GDDR5
Audio: Soundblaster X-fi Titanium
OS: Windows 7 & Windows 8 each on their own SSD drives.


As the topic says, my new 7970 GHz card is crashing with pretty much every game i've tried playing (WoW, Dishonored, Starcraft 2, D3, Deus-ex HR & ME 3).

Roughly 10 minutes into any game my monitors turn off and go into 'ready' state with no picture or signal and the fans on my 7970 start running at max speed. This doesn't crash my system though, as I can still hear the sounds from the game I was playing. The only way to recover from this is to do a hard reset from the power button, which then corrupts my winloader.exe forcing me to do a double boot to get my OS back up.

The temperatures on my card never exceed 71c during those games.

The problem doesn't manifest when running Furmark/3Dmark/Uniengine benchmarks. I've been able to reproduce it once with MSI kombustor stress test, but that was just once. I'm assuming it isn't my PSU as the card can run the benchmarks without problems.

I'm thinking this could be a driver problem where the Catalyst drivers crash during the game and are unable to recover ? There are no records of anything going "wrong" in windows event viewer after the crashes, just an entry about an unexpected shut down and that the system has rebooted.

I've already RMA'd the card once, got a new one of the exact same model back and the problem still persists. I can't believe I could have gotten two faulty cards?


So far to fix this i've tried the following (trying to remember everything) :

- Switching back in my old Geforce 560 ti and everything works fine with it. No crashes on any of the games. I'm assuming this is enough to rule out other faulty components (such a memory or hard drive)

- Tried multiple different versions of the Catalyst drivers (13.1, 13.2, 13.3-beta and 12.4) always uninstalled the previous ones and cleaned with driver sweeper before installing new ones.

- Running high performace power plan from Windows control panel and disabling all the power saving options from the advanced power settings tab.

- Underclocking the card by ~100MHz (from 1050 -> 950)

- Swtiching the PCI slot for the card.

- Updated my motherboard BIOS to the latest.

- Changed the power limit to +20% from CCC.

- Disabled the audio devices that came with the card from device manager.

- Removed CCC, installed MSI Afterburner and activated the unofficialOvercloking to force the card to stay at max stock clocks (@1050MHz) at all times.

- Tried running the games on another OS (Windows 8) on another hard drive. Still crashing.



I'm really confused as to what might be causing this problem other than faulty drivers. Any input or help would be much appreciated as I wouldn't want to go through with the RMA hassle all over again only to end up with the same type of card with the same problem.

Sorry my response is not what you were looking for but I have not heard good things about the this particular XFX model of the card. I've seen/heard quite a few people complain about this and I hope that someone here may have first hand info about this issue.

Looks like you have ruled out just about everything else being faulty.
Have you been able to rule out faulty ram, maybe?

Also do you run Afterburner with On screen display or GPU-Z logging to check what happens (gpu parameters) at the point the display crashes?

Haven't used Afterburner since setting my OC settings ages ago, but just because your GPU reports being 71C doesn't mean all of it is at an okay temp. Use GPU-Z to determine whether or not the VRMs are overheating if you haven't already, and also watch your card (open your case and look at it while it's running) to see whether or not your fan is running properly or something else is causing a problem. If the card is brand new and having so much trouble though, may just be DOA-ish.

Also, if possible try running the GPU in another system.

Thanks for the replies so far.

I tested both of my RAM sticks one at a time in different slots with no change to anything. I'll run a memtest later when I have the time for it, just to make sure.

I'm currently running MSI afterburner and GPU-z both side-by-side on my other monitor to scan out any abnormalities. I'll see if I can get a decent screenshot of the graphs prior to a crash later today, I can pretty accurately predict the crashes in games so that should help with it.

So far I havn't noticed any alarming temperatures with either of the softwares. The card sits at 48c idle and around 60-70 under stress. The VDDC (which i'm guessing is the voltage for the card) goes from 0.950V idle to 1.213V under stress.

There are no notable physical problems with the cards fans or anything, except for a rather loud coil buzz, which i'm guessing is pretty common for high-end cards (it's still pretty loud though, can hear it clearly even when the case is closed).

Trying to keep this thread posted with any further development.

Make sure you enable logging in GPU-Z, so that you can go back and look at the values later.

I'm not sure what to make of these, it seems that first the card stays running even with max stock clocks. Then after a few crashes it starts crashing as soon as the clocks go up to 1000+MHz.

The logs were made playing World of Warcraft and Starcraft 2. I also tried running MSI kombustor for a few minutes after the first crashes but couldn't get it to crash the system.

Can anyone draw any conclusions from these?

Were you in-game just prior to the crashes? Your core clock and GPU load is all over the place.

GPUs do down clock, but to have the memory at 1500 and the core at 500 and then jump back to 1000 is very odd indeed.

I was in game and playing for some minutes for the first two logs.

For the next two the system had just rebooted and crashed almost as soon as I fired up Starcraft 2.

The card started crashing on normal desktop use aswell up to the point where I could barely get a minute of use before it crashed. One crash had vertical lines filling the whole screen.

I removed all catalyst software and drivers via driver sweeper in safe mode and the system seems stable again. As it is i'm running with the windows generic drivers, which thankfully enable the screen to go up to 1920x1080 resolution.

The card seems to run stable without any drivers, of course i can't test any of the games as they won't launch, but I tried stressing the card by streaming multiple simultaneous 1080p video streams and it didn't crash.

I'm *almost* positive now that the fault lies within the drivers and i'm guessing there's nothing i can really do about it ?

I was wondering if getting a new motherboard would fix the problems, but it's such a big hassle to dismantle and rebuild the system again, not to mention the cost of a new mobo just to get a graphics card to work.

I'm still hoping i'll find someway to fix this mess, but at the moment it seems like my only option is to RMA the card a second time and try switching it for another type.

Have you tried running the card in another system?

If not, have you tried running it on a fresh install?

While buying new hardware is fun, you don't need to do it in order to determine what's going on.

I currently don't really have another system I could try it on. Mostly everyone I know uses laptops nowdays.

I could try formating my Windows 8 installation and dropping a fresh windows 7 on it just to try it out...

I'd try that when possible, as it may save you the headache of another RMA.

Main reason I bring that up is because I've read more than once where people have trouble installing nVidia GPUs after switching over from AMD, and if the previous software is not removed completely (often a problem for CCC, not so sure about nVidia's software/drivers) then this can cause issues. I've also had problems in the past where a new version of CCC cannot be installed because the old version never removed itself completely, but that hasn't been since 5770 days; it's much better the past couple years.

Me again.

I re-installed windows 8 on top of my previous installation of it. With just Firefox, all available updates to W8 and newest catalyst drivers (13.3) installed I got around 5 minutes into Diablo 3 before the first crash.

Funnily enough it was stable in desktop use again, but gaming still crashed it.


I'll try to ask around tomorrow if anyone has a machine I could try the card on. I'll report back with results.

Seems like a problem with the card itself, but trying it in another machine will tell you for sure.

What part number do you have? There were a couple "ghz" edition cards with one being 1000mhz stock clock and one with 1050mhz stock clock.

Maybe you have the 1000mhz clock card and its just unstable at 1050mhz?? Just a suggestion.

I'm fairly sure it isn't a problem with the clocks as dropping them to 950/1400 (from 1050/1500) didn't help.

I've now unplugged the 7970 card since getting anything done with it was impossible and my system and games are running fine with my old GTX 560ti.

Going over to a friends house later today to test the 7970 on another system.

I'd say the card is bad. That's pretty rough to get 2 bad cards in a row, but it happens. Anytime I've had a GPU run fine with no drivers, then crash when any drivers were installed, it has ended up being a faulty GPU.
If that's what you conclude, hopefully your next card will be a good one.

I have the same processor and the same motherboard and my 7970's work fine in my system, both on a very old motherboard BIOS as well as the latest one (upgrading my motherboard BIOS made my computer boot/post 10 seconds faster, btw - now loading win 8 takes less than 10 seconds).

At first it sounded as if your cards are not getting enough power, but you have a strong enough PSU - You are sure the cables are all seated properly, you are using the correct power cables and not some molex sollution, and the card is properly seated in the PCI slot? - I know basic stuff and you surely have already fixed it, but I myself also didn't properly check cables at one time, dismissing such things as silly, of course they were all good hehe. (Doh!).

Did you try different connectors from the card to your monitor?

I went ovet to a friends house to try the card on his computer and it crashed just like it did on my system.

I guess that rules it down to being a falty card and just incredibly bad luck to get two of them in a roll.

Going to fill an RMA application to the shop that sold me the card next. I was thinking about asking them to switch the card either to a Gigabyte 7970 GHz model or a GTX 670 thats within the same price range.
