I actually had to take multiple looks - to be sure I wasn't seeing things.

MIcroCenter Fairfax has two different XFX HD6850s - standard and Black Edition.

They are the same price - *except* the Black Edition has a $30 rebate making it that much cheaper.

Yes, you read right; they are priced identically before rebates come into play.

The question is - what gives?

It kinda throws a wrench into a limited-run card when it's priced identically to, if not less than, the standard stuff.

Microcenter does that from time to time, did you get that card??

If I can scrape up the additional (I was looking more in terms of HD6670 or HD6770, also from XFX), as it has the power usage of the HD6770 (if not a little bit less), and it has a wider GPU bus (256-bit v. 128-bit). Labor Day will tell the tale.

It would be a decided change, as I haven't had even a midrange, let alone above-midrange, graphics card since I took the AGP bus to *play* (All-In-Wonder 9700 Pro).

The TZ68A+RCH it's going into has no *endangered* slots (despite this being a two-slot card) as I have no PCIe x1 cards at all (my sound card and TV tuner are full-length PCI, not PCIe) and CrossFire isn't planned (and from what I've turned up on the HD6850, in either standard or BE trim, about as necessary in single-display terms as a third foot).

Quite honestly, for price reasons, this card would normally be an outlier. The fact that it undercuts the standard version from XFX got my attention; however, the oddness of said pricing set off the alarm bells.
