I built a computer in January 2011, and paid like $319 for an XFX HD6970, 2GB...

Today I was thinking about adding a second one, and I go online and see that it now cost $400+....

WTF?

I thought it would be much cheaper, not more expensive. I figured it would be around $200 since its a year old...

Whats going on with the price of RADEON video cards? Why is the same card from over a year ago more expensive now?

Isn't the price supposed to go down over time?

It's because the 6900 cards are no longer being produced. They are about to be replaced by the 7800 cards. Most sites have next to no 6900 cards left in stock.

True, just the like Phenom IIs, AMD is pushing the FX chip or Fusion APUs on us. Try finding one 2nd hand?

Supply and Demand sometimes doesn't make sense when you deal with computer components....

The 7870 replaces the 6970; the HardOCP review showed the 7870 to be faster in one game and the same in others, and their MSRPs are the same at $350. The 7870 also uses less power and generates less heat, so they will be much more appealing for Crossfire.

That is, if AMD can get their 7xxx drivers under control.

used might be a better option, especially with those warranty transferrable ones

Just sell that bad boy and pick up a 7970. LOL.

I had the same complaints about my 5-series cards. Bought my 5850 @ $250 used when new they were all $325. When I wanted to go crossfire I couldn't find any good deals. Finally grabbed a second one after waiting a few months, but then the market for them went crazy with Bitcoin demand. Go fig!

I agree, sell your old 6970 and get a new card like the 7970 or wait till Kepler.

This has more to do with drying up sales. Speccially with the 69xx cards, as they are great bitmining workhorses.

But you see this with all electronics. Look at DDR2 prices, or try find a decent price on a DDR1 stick. As a unit is heading out of production, prices decrease, places try to unload and minimize stock before the replacement product hits the shelves. Then as stock goes down and gets closer to demand level prices start to increase so that people who need the product has to pay more. This is why people don't recommend don't suggest planning for SLI/Crossfire if you are not get the other card right away.

It's one thing getting a 7950 now because you are building your system, knowing that as Kelper hits it will get cheaper and you buy the second card then. But once the dust has settled on Kelper and the price slotting/adjustments have happened, the prices are going to be pretty static till production stops.
