XFX HD5770 Boot Problems

Hello!

I just installed my 5770 yesterday and had problems from the get-go. Upon power-up, the video card's fan would rev at 100% and my computer would not POST, no matter how long I waited. It usually takes about 10-20 hard reboots to get my computer to boot normally. After that however, everything runs smoothly.

There are times, too, when my video card boots without the fan going crazy, but there's still no display.

This whole hard rebooting a million times seems to be taking a toll on my main HDD. Sometimes, when the video card starts normally and my computer POSTS, my main HDD isn't detected and consequently, Windows can't start. My previous card (7900GTX), still runs without a hitch.

I've been researching my particular problem and haven't come across a working solution. I've uninstalled my previous Nvidia drivers. I've tried updating my BIOS to no avail. I've also tried switching memory slots, which some have reported to work, but my computer doesn't POST afterward. I've tested the 5770 on my dad's system and it booted fine on the first try! (I've only tried once.)

On a less serious note, the boot and Windows start screen is displayed in a 4:3 aspect ratio, rather than 16:10. These screens were 16:10 on my dad's system with my card.

Any help/suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!

Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
Intel Core i7-860
Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD4P
G.Skill 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
XFX HD5770
Rosewill RG630-S12 630W PSU
 
Get a power supply tester. Preferably this one. Check to see if your -5v line is out, or swap power supplies. See if that makes a difference.
 
Had a similar problem on a friend's new machine last weekend. Turned out my PSU I was letting him borrow didn't like the card and motherboard. If you have another PSU, attempt to power everything but the 5770 on the original PSU, and use the second PSU to power the 5770. Use a paperclip on the second PSU's 24-pin connector, sticking one end into the green terminal and one into the black to jump it.

PS, I wouldn't trust a rosewill PSU to anything but an extreme budget build. Had a friend fry half his stuff on a 500W rosewill while it was idling in windows.
 
Thank you guys for the quick responses. My last rig was on a cheap PSU as well, an Nspire 550W. I guess I should look into buying a new one. Unfortunately, I don't have a spare lying around to try what you suggested, Dethred. I'll ask my dad if he has a power supply tester tomorrow night.

He's currently using a Modxtream Pro 700. Apart from any other suggestions as what I should do, do you guys have any suggestions on a cheap and reliable PSU to buy? Thanks, again.

Edit: How is this PSU (OCZ ModXStream Pro OCZ500MXSP 500W)? It's going on sale in an hour for ~$34 after coupon and rebates.

I'm about to blow your mind. I have the same card, same ram, and same Gigabyte motherboard, just the MATX version. I had the same problem.

Remove the stick of ram furthest from the CPU slot. When the machine posts, up the ram voltage by .1v and make sure you OVERCLOCK the cpu slightly. It WILL NOT post if you reboot with stock settings. Overclock it slightly (200mhz ish) then hit f10. Do a full boot into windows, shut down through software. Leave the psu switch on, insert second stick of ram.

It will work. I spent over a month troubleshooting this, but I can repeat the above 100% over and over and it never fails. Once you get it working, update your bios.
 
Haha, wow. Thank you so much. I, however, already swapped PSUs with another PC and the 5770 boots without a problem. It seems like my Rosewill power supply was the culprit. My main HDD still had trouble being detected, though, on the first boot. Unless someone can tell me why, I'm guessing that all that hard-rebooting messed it up. This never happened before I installed my 5770.

FWIW, my mind was still blown.
