XFX HD 4890 WOW

Biggest jump I made was from nothing to a Voodoo 3 2000. I was so god damn amazed, man. GPU tp GPU though, it was that same Voodoo 3 to a GeForce 6800 Ultra. Once again, I was shocked. Since then I stay pretty up to date.

So I am thinking of doing a video card upgrade, currently I have a 7950 GTX2 card, I am running W6600 quad core clocked at 2.8ghz. I am thinking of getting a POWERCOLOR PCS+ AX4890 1GBD5-PPH Radeon HD 4890. Well I see a much of a difference these two cards in games? Or should I go for a new CPU first than video card later on this year>?

so is that a 7950gx2 and Q6600? if so then even a 4850 or 4870 would be a nice upgrade. what res are you playing at?? at 1920 a 4890 would be okay as that Q6600 at 2.8 would get you about 90-95%+ of what a 4890 is capable of. at 1680 though I would probably get a 4870 1gb though as thast plenty of card for that res and your cpu will handle it no prob.

My monitor is a 37" so I try and game at 1920, but with today's games and the hardware I have it is getting really hard. I tried the arma2 demo earlier this afternoon. I think I was getting well under 10fps, and that was under the 1920 rez I prefer.

well I know that game needs a decent cpu according to the Firingsquad article. the i7 walked all over the lower clocked core 2 cpus. http://firingsquad.com/hardware/ARMAII_gpu_performance/page6.asp

"Even under very high, we’re still pretty CPU-bound. If you’ve got one of the lower-end quad-cores like the Q8400 or the Q6600 which run at lower clock speeds, you’ll definitely want to OC your processor for ARMA II. "

I would grab a 4890 and try to get it a little more out of that cpu if possible. you could also just go with a 4870 1gb especially if youre stuck at 2.8 with the Q6600.

I have a Voodoo 2 8meg (or was it 12 meg?), a Voodoo 3 2000, and the first ATI Radeon card sitting around here someplace.

Congrats to the OP btw. I have been updating graphic cards so often that I haven't seen a huge jump in performance in awhile. I am only used to small jumps which does take the fun out of it.

Well after a few weeks of playing with this card I've settled it in at 1.35v 1000:1150. Runs nicely in game. No overheating problems. I like this card so much that yesterday I bought another one...:D. Partly due to a new build with a UD3P, OCZ Blades and a PC-P&C 860. I don't want to risk removing the ramsinks off of this 4890... so it goes to my girlfriends system, and the new 4890 get's an EK-FC4890 cooler. Can't wait to start the new build.... come on New Egg!!!

Make absolutely sure you've got enough heatsink on those VRMs. Your temps didn't look bad, but ATI's horrible VRM cooling still has me worried having switched from 8800 GTXs to 4890s.
