Installed my new card yesterday with just a bit of hair pulling. Clamped on the water block and ram sinks and powered on. This card makes my old x1950xtx junk.... even though it was a very nice card. Gonna do a bit of clocking to see where this card is comfy.

Congrats! That's a 3 generation jump of ATI hardware, so you had to have huge performance benefits.

Still, I have you beat though, when I upgraded from my GeForce 2 MX to a GeForce 7800 GTX. It was night and day obviously :)

Nice upgrade. You should be very impressed with the performance boost!

I need to convince myself to hold onto a card for at least a generation skip. I've forgotten what it feels like to see that big jump. Nothing like it.

Congrats on the card OP and have a good time.

I like the XFX Radeon HD 4890 as well, and would be my choice for an ATI card.

I went from EVGA 7800 GS (AGP slot) to 2 BFG GTX 280 OCX in SLI. Very fun :)

did you use the same waterblock? that would have been extra sweet

Yep the same water block (DD) fit right on it no problems. I wanted to test the card stock before putting it on water, but my south bridge is in the water loop and there was not enough room. I was a bit nervous stripping a band new card and gluing rams sinks on it without even a test run......... whew...... it worked. All my games are now at max settings and I'm grinning big... :D

That's a very nice upgrade, keep us apprised regarding how you like the card and how it performs when overclocking it. I am in the market for a new card and I have my heart set on the 4890 right now. My 8800GT isn't cutting it anymore.

I went from Evga 6600GT to XFX 4890 XT,so i know how you feel. Have fun with your new 4890

Congrats, man, I remember I had a 7300LE and it BLEW balls, and I could barely play anything TIL i got my 8800GT,man I was so happy. But congrats.

Not yet but will soon
hurry up! holy cow you are killing that card with your cpu at a measly 2.13. thats the equivalent of putting my E8500 at 1.8-1.9. depending on what res you are using you could only be getting 60-70% of what that card can do. in other words you would be getting the same performance from a cheaper and slower card with your cpu at stock speeds.

7900GS to GTX 260

Should be here tomorrow, will be extra sweet as I've been a month without a card since the 7900 died.

I went from an ATI 9600XT to an Nvidia 7900GS that I modded and overclocked by 50%. HUGE Jump. Then I went to an ATI 3870... another huge jump, and then to an ATI 4850.. another huge jump.

I can only imagine what a jump you are seeing with your new card... especially once you clock your CPU up to decent speeds.

i remember going "athlon 1800 w/radeon 9000" to "intel q6600 w/8800gts" stupid night and day performance increases....

i went from a voodoo banshee 16mb to an 8800GT...

lol jk.. but i really do have a working voodoo banshee.. :p

back to the topic at hand... i went from a 6200 OC to a 7300GT killed the 7300GT went back to the 6200 OC then went to my 8800GT.. and then i bought a 24" monitor and relized just how awesome the card really was after using it on a 19" 4:3 display for 6 months..

let us all know how the 4890 does.. especially on water.. see if temps actually make a difference in the overclocking of the gpu..

What temps are you getting with the water block??

one of my favorite upgrades was from a 16k ram CGA 4-color ISA card to a 512k ram VGA 256-color ISA card. Not really for the performance but so you could play the latest games with all the colors.

I do still have a TNT 16mb and a banshee laying around too.

Not to mention how much money you save.

Just some quick temps. Done a little clock push on the card with ATI Tray Tools, then ran GPU-Z. First pic idle, second pic with GPU-Z. Maybe later today I'll see how far this card will clock.

I went from a P4 1.5ghz Radeon 8500 to E6600 1900XT... 6 year gap ftw.

ti4200-->8800GTS
7 year gap nearly....heh.

How high is your E6600 clocked, OP?

Well, currently I'm at C2Q 3.0, 4GB and .. an X850XT. It was only my work machine, so raw 3D gaming power wasn't needed at all. I left mainstream gaming in 2006.

But I feel I did miss a lot. Oblivion, Mass Effect, lots of other great titles. Few years at least.

So I'm going up to 4890 next week. I wonder what will happen :)

Same here...sorta! I went from a Geforce 2 MX to a Geforce 7900GT and it was like night and day literally. RMAed my 7900gt and got a 8800gts 320mb! THANKS EVGA <- shout out to EVGA. Awesome customer service/support. Now rocking on a new 260GTX. Upgraded when MC had the i7 for 199 with my friend at the same time...except he got the XFX 4890.... I am content with mine but the XFX 4890 is just dam hawt!

If I were to get a card I would go with the sapphire vapor-x 4890. From the review it has better stock cooling. Guess the op is wcing so it don't matter then.

I also have a X1950XTX and want to upgrade.. man I feel stupid paying 500 bucks for that thing right when it came out. I play WoW 1920x1200 and maybe FEAR/Crysis in future, is the 4890 worth the extra over 4870? I would also like to be able to run SLI when I upgrade my board in the future. I'm sure for WoW the 4870 is fine but dont want to have poor performance on current games..

until you do upgrade that cpu theres not much point in getting a high end gpu. you wouldnt even get 40% of what a 4870 much less a 4890 could do with that single core P4.

Yes, exactly how its described in sig.. Really, that sucks, time for a new machine then?

and I have a dual core processor.. not that it makes much difference?
