xfx 6950 unlock

Just grabbed 2 xfx 6950 2gb cards from comp usa wondering if any one has had luck flashing these cards to the 6970 bios??
 
yes, there's a thread about it.. I would say around 150 people here did it..

I've had luck doing it. I think that you, like me, will run into CPU/motherboard/platform bottlenecks unless you're pushing hardcore eyefinity resolutions, if your comp in your sig is your currently running machine.

With my XFX6950, I had to run the program to dump a copy of the card bios, then mod it for unlocked shaders, then reflash with the batch file. With my setup, my screen went out after the bios flash, so I let the screen sit for a few minutes, then forced rebooted, and it worked out fine. Hopefully your experience will go smoother than mine was.

Also, I believe from reading the GIANT thread on this at TechPowerUp, that it's easier/better to flash the cards one at a time, with only one in your computer at a time, then put them back together for crossfire after programming them individually.
 
no the rig these are going into is a 2600k @ 5ghz 16gb patriot ddr3 memory 850watt crossfire sli certified psu on a asus p8p67 mobo
 
I would just go for the unlocked bios with the normal memory settings. There's a link to another forum with instructions and downloads. People have killed their memory going with the full on 6970 bios.
 
Crap, I just realized that you said 6970 bios! I did not do that, I did the shader unlock for my 6950. Sorry for the confusion. I would NOT recommend the 6970 because as tikiman2012 mentioned, there have been issues with cards becoming permanently damaged with them. Damn I feel like an ass now :(

I STRONGLY recommend only 6850 unlock with overclocking if you need more power.
 
Hello, I don't mean to highjack the thread, but I did not want to create a new thread for this one quick question I have: I got a sapphire 6950 which I unlocked using the sapphire shader unlock bios, not the 6970 bios, so my clock speeds are like a normal 6950. In catalyst control centre, I am unable to overclock past 840 mhz, and I downloaded MSI afterburner version 2.1.0 beta 7, and I am still unable to go past 840 on the GPU. How is it that people are overclocking past this value. Sorry, I am very new to overclocking. Thanks for any responses.
 
Not all 6950s are equal! Just because other people can overclock well doesn't mean you're guaranteed it.
 
I just bought three xfx 6950's from compusa. Was cheaper then newegg, newegg raised the price. I was able to flash all three and they now are in tri crossfire working fine.
 
Aly you have to enable unoffical overclocking in afterburner to go higher than 840. check the latest afterburner documentation for instructions on how to do so.
