xfx 6870 2gb

Hey all.

I just noticed this card on newegg

and I am very interested in buying it.

The reason I want this card and say not a 6950 is because im already running a 6870 1gb so i was thinking of cross-firing them, and using the 2gb as the primary card.

I am wondering if I would benefit more from buying this second 6870 instead of a 6950 or 6970. Im currently running eyefinity 5870x1080

You won't benefit from the additional RAM. You would need 2x 2Gig cards for that.

True. You might as well just get another 6870 1GB if you want to crossfire. The crossfired cards will be ram limited by the one with the least memory.

Thing is tho will i see a better performance getting a second 6870 or a single 6950 because of my resolution?

I think it will depend on the game. At that eyefinity resolution, especially with AA applied you may can become memory starved on the 1GB 6870's where a single 2GB 6950 would pull ahead. I cannot give any specific examples off the top of my head though. I am pretty sure for most games the 6870's would offer the superior performance.

On resolution/games that don't need 2 GB and work well with crossfire, you would be better with 2*68xx.

On games that need tons of ram, maybe you could run the game just on the 2GB card.

Just a thought.

This seems like a good idea, I could just set up profiles to make it so the 1gb card would be disabled correct?
