XFX 5850..dies again

Welcome to the club. I have the same card, and I'm on my second. Hopefully you have more fun gaming on your 8600 for the next ~3 weeks than I did gaming on my HD 4650 while I waited my three weeks for an RMA to go through.

heh, the 8600 is a match for the HD4550, not the HD4650 :(

you are really making my feel comfortable with my XFX cards... :(

Just disappointed with mine. It's frustrating to have a nice new gaming rig and not being able to use it as such because of a defective card. I think from now on I will stick to reference cards, even if they cost a little more. Some research has made it seems like XFX cuts a lot of corners on their non-reference cards - the cooler isn't as good, the components aren't as good. The RMA process was one of the easiest ones I've used - I didn't have to jump through any hoops to get an RMA authorized, but the turnaround time was very slow due to them being on the other side of the country. I wouldn't let it discourage you from an XFX-branded reference card, and the XFX HD 5450 I bought for like $30AR back in July has been running like a complete champ with no problems whatsoever, but it has discouraged me from any non-reference cards as it allows the manufacturer to skimp on components to save money.

I've never seen the stuff about XFX using cheaper components on non-reference cards substantiated. It's all just rumor mongering on forums. Almost all non-reference cards from many manufacturers do stuff like cut out user voltage software control and replace the reference cooler with a different design (usually one that exhausts some hot air back into the system). It is not XFX specifically but bascially all non-reference cards from all manufacturers unless it is a high end overclocked one from Asus or MSI that is even more expensive than the reference card. Don't blame XFX for non-reference issues, buy a reference card if you want the standard cooler and reference components.

Are you a fourth grade student? 400W power supply at 80% efficiency would pull 500W from the wall if pulling 400W. I picked those numbers be cause it was even numbers. I never even mentioned a 500W power supply. Bitch for no reason much without thinking?

But he has a 500W PSU? So why mention a 400W unit. Everyone is going to assume you just can't do sums...

The irony is, XFX are the highest quality non-reference cards. So what does that say about the others?

Oh, and don't be surprised if you get a refurb card back from RMA with greasy fingerprints on it and a dusty heatsink. :(

You got to be fucking kidding me. Way to spout some BS. I just received my 5850 from xfx. They sent me a retail boxed sealed with everything in there. It smelled like fresh plastic. Total time for RMA was about 2 weeks.

Good for you. Guess I wasn't as lucky. I got one with a dusty fan, a dusty heatsink, dust on the DVI connectors, small scratches on the sticker (which had the protective plastic already removed), and some big greasy fingerprints on the PCB. It was in the retail box, but one that had been closed up with packing tape, not the factory seal sticker.

Of my XFX RMAs returns, one was a used 8800GTX but it was sparkling clean aside from a scuff or two on the heatshroud.

The other was a 9800GTX that looked brand new, including plastic film.
