Nothing much more to say... I replaced a 7600GT for a 4870 (this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150436&Tpk=HD-487A-ZWFC ) and in some games, for exemple Crysis and Risen, after a few minutes, usually less than 5 minutes, it will lock up.
At first I thought it was overheating, so I ran Furmark and it didnt lock up for 5 minutes.
Not only that but it was 10 degrees higher than when it locks up in those games.
I tried playing the game with the GPU core underclocked and the issue is the same.
I also tried at a lower resolution, 1280x800 (I run 1920x1200) and although it did lock up, it took a while longer for some reason.
Tried the latest drivers as well as the ones that came with the card, same issue.
Thanks.
Edit: Well, it seems it might just be overheating... Tried with the fan at 100% and case open and it has yet to lock up. I was under the impression that a 4870 could run fine at 70-75 degrees? Thats around where it locks up for me... Man this stinks.
Actually nevermind, used GPU-Z to log temps and it doesnt go over 65 degrees... Whats going on?!
Using ATi Tools Tray's 3D renderer, GPU currently at 81 degrees and still no sign of locking up.
Help please? Any comment, ANY, would be helpful!
Fixed... Sort of. Got a fan to blow directly at the back of the card, it seems its the VRMs that are overheating. Was able to go through the entire Crysis demo with no problem.
This'll teach me of getting cheap versions of graphics cards.
