xeon x3440 overclocking results!

so far i've hit a stable 3.61GHz with my xeon x3440. (190 bclk, 19x multiplier)

a picture is worth a thousand words, though. :)





so what do you think of the temps? 20 passes of ITB at a stress level of high and i managed to average 61.75C across all four cores. i certainly could've pushed this chip farther, but i'd like to improve my cooling just a bit before i do. i'm using 1.25 vcore at the moment, at least that's what it's set to in my bios. cpu-z is reporting a lower 1.232 for some reason. i think once i add a few more case fans as well as a second fan on my hyper 212+ for a push/pull config, i should be able to bump up to around 3.8GHz. i suppose i could even try 4.0, but i want to ultimately settle in at a more realistic/safe number as i'll be running this machine just about 24/7.
 
Temps loook good, but the 60's are kinda pushing it. I think that particular xeon thermally shuts down at around ~75*c ?
 
75C? i gotta go take a nap before work, but i'll have to do some poking around and see if i can confirm that. seems too low.

remember though, those temps are after 20 passes of intel burn test set to high stress level (uses 2048MB of ram) and pushing all four cores (eight threads) to 100% load. nothing i ever do with this system under normal usage conditions will stress it that much.
 
You'll be fine up to 85c or 90c MAX to be honest, some people rather keep theres 80c or below but that's their choice.

I'm currently testing mine at 3.6GHz too.

What motherboard are you using? And I would switch to Real Temp - TjMax is 99°C.
 
that was a question i had actually, with regard to tjmax. i wasn't sure what the correct value should be for these xeons. is there an intel spec sheet with the right number? i just left coretemp at the default number and didn't mess with the offsets, but coretemp registers my xeon as a core i7. i'll give realtemp a try.

i'm using a gigabyte p55-ud4p. think i'm going to stick with the 3.61GHz for the time being. i just got this system built about a week ago. i don't want to be too greedy too soon. still got some headroom, though. my ram is only running at 1520MHz. if i can get just a little bit better cooling, i think i'd be comfortable with 200 bclk, giving me 3.8GHz for the cpu and 1600MHz for the ram.
 
i have just a few more questions, as i'm very new to overclocking these quad core hyper-threaded new fangle dangled cpus.

here are some of my voltages. i'd like to know if they are properly set. i only manually set my dram and vcore. all other settings were left at auto in my bios (using the F3 revision on my p55-ud4p).

vcore - 1.250v
qpi/vtt - 1.100v
pch core - 1.050v
cpu pll - 1.800v
dram voltage - 1.500v

one last question. i've disabled turbo boost, eist, c1e and c3/c6/c7. i did this while i was initially tweaking in order to get things stable. should any of these be re-enabled? i know i need to leave turbo boost off. and i'll likely leave speed step off as well, but what about the various c states?
 
C States off i say, a long with Spread Spectrum.
To overclock further most people just with QPI at 1.350 and cpu PLL at 1.9 and DRAM at 1.66 (ignore the message, it's fine so long as it's within 0.5v of the QPI)
With these voltages i jsut stated you may as well just try 200x20 and should ok, the Xeons are damn good.
