xeon vs c2d for image processing

i have been looking at upgrading my image processing machine as it is starting to lag. in a conversation the other person said they were running a xeon proc and it just screamed compared to a c2d. can anyone shed any light on this, or should i just go with building my c2d machine and put the moneny towards more ram?

That person doesn't really know what they're talking about, because saying 'Xeon' doesn't mean much specifically - it could mean an old Pentium 4 derived Netburst chip (Dempsey), or it could mean a Core 2 Duo derived (Clovertown/Woodcrest) chip. (Yes Woodcrest runs at 1333 FSB, and yes each FB-DIMM has an AMB controller chip and a serialized interface, however memory latency goes to hell and largely offsets the other performance gains.) Clovertown and Woodcrest aren't *that* different from their equivalent Core 2 Duo chips otherwise.

And of course Xeon motherboards cost a lot (dual socket 771 go for about $500) and FB-DIMMs aren't cheap (1GB modules start at $120, 2GB for $260, and 4GB at $1480, yes $1480 per module). But hey if you need 8 cores and 32GB or more of RAM, what else are you going to do?
 
image processing? like photoshop rendering?

doesn't need to be crazy fast for that, I can still do good stuff on my 2.8ghz p4 w/ 4gb ram.

Depends on how much image processing you do.If time is of vital importance , yes a Xeon system will be faster simply because you can have 2x cores.

Alternatively you could use a Kentsfield , a Q6600 on your C2Q machine.Pricey , but will offer most of what the Xeons could.
