i want to buy the core 2 quad 8400 but i read some reviews from people who chose the xeon yorkfield quad core over it...i can understand part because of the virtualization technology..but if i get a xeon..would i have to run a different operating system like vista business or a server type os..or can i still just run vista ultimatex64 like i have now.? any help is great..thanks
 
You can run the same OS. The Yorkfield would be faster in most cases once OCed because it would likely OC higher and has a much larger onboard cache. I don't generally recommend 8 series quads.
 
Xeon yorkfield cpu would also probably be lower vID vs its C2Q counterpart thus more overclockable.

yeah i already have a fancy mobo but im using a pentiumD820 right now so i want to upgrade the cpu before i go buy a video card...otherwise any new gpu will be bottlenecked using a pentium d. so yeah.
 
You sure your current board will take a 45nm quad anyway? Or any quad for that matter? Not all LGA775 boards are created equal. I have an older Shuttle downstairs with an LGA775 3Ghz P4 in it that can't take a C2D or C2Q even with the latest BIOS.
 
im not that dumb lol i know my board can take it i have a gigabyte ga-ep45-ud3r..itll take it.
 
Do you need ECC ram? Do you need a dual socket board?
Odds are you do not need a Xeon. They are made for servers and workstations.

There are plenty of single socket / LGA775 Xeons. Honestly they're just rebadged C2D/C2Qs with slightly altered microcode and higher official thermal tolerances for a server environment. I run one, and have for quite a while now. It didn't work very well in a couple of 680i boards, but other than that has been trouble free. Honestly at this point though I just wish I'd bought a Q6600 -- the extra hassle, however minor, wasn't worth it. I console myself with the fact that if I were the type to use case badges, the Xeon badge is way cooler. ;)

I really wish Intel and AMD would stop using different sockets for their single and multi-processor chips. It's entirely unnecessary, they're just making you pay more for a slightly different package.

My point was that unless you need a chip for a high reliability server enviornment the extra money over a desktop yorkfield is not worth it, imo.
 
Somtimes it is. I for one, bought a X3350 because all the equivalent yorkies were sold out! And I paid the same price as a Q9450.

If you do get a Xeon quad. Look up the l3360. Otherwise, save up for something faster like a core i7
