Greetings,

I read somewhere that the i7-3930K doesn't have the necessary QI links to allow it to function in a dual CPU configuration. If this is true, what is the Xeon-equivalent CPU? :D Next rig will have to feature somewhere around 128GB to 256GB RAM and two CPUs. (This will probably be 2 years away before I do it.)

If it's two years away, wait two years and ask the question.

In two years we'll be on Haswell-E or Broadwell-E with DDR4 supporting even more RAM...

There is a single socket Xeon Equivalent: E5-1650.

E5-2643 comes close but is 4/8 instead of 6/12, but clocks are similar.

There is no unlocked S2011 CPU with support for dual CPU configuration.

The rest is in the naming - Xeon E5 are the CPU for S2011 (Xeon E3 is for S1155). Then after that you get the maximum CPU sockets supported (1/2/4) and then number in the specific model range.

So if you want a dual socket S2011 CPU, then you need Xeon E5-2xxx. If you want quad socket S2011 CPU, then you need Xeon E5-4xxx :
