I've seen it mentioned that the E5 1XXX V2 can be overclocked on a 1P consumer board. Does the same hold true with a E5 2XXX V2? Or are they both limited to setting the multiplier to max allowed on all cores? (Which would rule out the 2692 which doesn't even have turbo)

I'm interested in upgrading my 3930K (4.3Ghz) in the near future for Windows 10 and DX12 scaling to all available cores. However, it looks as if I won't gain much unless I can score a cheap 2695 V2 or higher it looks like, and a spicy version at that for cost reasons.

I found an article on this forum that says the 1650 and 1660 are unlocked (6 core) but how about the 1680 (8 core)?

EDIT: Looks like it is. I've been looking, but it appears that there isn't a spicy 1680 V2 - can anyone confirm?

If you ever have any questions of if an Intel process exists or not, go to their Ark page.

As it is the 1600 v2's never got an 8-core. One good way to tell if it exists or not is to look at the extreme's since those are cut down xeon's anyways.

For example:

Xeon 1600 V2 Family

i7 2011 4k series

Now you have the Xeon V3 series and the i7 5k series:

Xeon 1600 V3 Family *scroll to the bottom.

i7 5k Family

Thank you both for that info!

I will probably wait until the 1680's come down more in price, or if I can piece together a V3 system cheaper I may do that (it seems like those V3 processors are a LOT cheaper).

The E5-1680 V2 is indeed fully unlocked. It's the only available CPU that's overclockable that 1) is based on something other than Intel's LCC (low core count) die and 2) has more than 20MB of L3 cache. It's also the only unlocked CPU with >6 cores that's available for the X79 platform.

1680v2 is an 8 core. There are even a few on ebay as we speak - but at $1k, why bother :p maybe for science+ :D

What we really need is someone with too much money who can buy this and give it a shot:

https://www.sabrepc.com/intel-cm806...3-2-5ghz-lga2011-14-core-server-cpu-tray.html

My bet is that they're not unlocked, but who knows...

The E5-1691 V3 is a custom SKU created by Intel for a specific client and is NOT (or will ever be) available in the channel. The listing by SabrePC that you've linked to is a placeholder that will never be filled and they don't have it in stock (or ever will).

If they did have them in stock, I'd be all over them like a starving Great White shark who comes across a cove full of fat, lazy seals...:D

If you want them, e-mail Intel's Executive Team and voice your interest. If enough people speak up, they may acquiesce...however, most people who want one are unwilling to do this for some reason.

I thought it was the same deal with the 1680v2? I was looking for info on it all over the web back when the v2's were released, and all I found was indeed a couple of webshops, and nothing on ebay, either.

I have Xeon E5-1680 v3 and it is fully unlocked. Xeons series E5-2xxx are locked.

The real questions is why you would need the Xeon E5-1680 series. Instead of i7-5960X. The only practical difference between them is that Xeon supports up to 128 GB ECC RAM in some mobos while i7 up to 64 GB RAM. I have 128 GB ECC RAM with Xeon in Asus X99-E WS mobo and all works perefectly. But if you do not need a lot of RAM Xeon has no meaning.

See, now we're talkin. This is a good thread.

Just saying, if the 1691 v3 is unlocked, a 14c/28t daily driver at 4.5GHz is possible.

Which is exactly why Intel won't release these chips to the channel...:(

You want them? Get your letter-writing fingers a-typing and communicate your wishes to those executives at Intel who can make it happen. If enough people speak up, Intel just might acquiesce.
