Xeon E5 CPU Cooler recommendation

A little more info about your plans would be helpful;
What is your case CPU clearance?
How tall are the big heatsinks on mobo?
Which orientation do you want to mount the coolers?
Do you plan to overclock?

The CPU's are xeons so there won't be any overclocking and the chips are rated for145w at full load so it needs to be something beefy to handle the potential heat
Any 2011 HSF will fit as long as it clears your ram and on board heatsinks
Xeon specific coolers tend to be noisy as soon as they are under load so I wouldn't go anywhere near any of them.

Good point. Since there was no OC potential I just took it for granted that it did not need a
beefy heatsink. Didn't even consider the high TDP!

So I guess one of them Corsairs AIO watercoolers might just be what the doctor ordered?

One of the will only cool one Xeon :D
Couple decent air coolers are much less money and will do the job as good or better with no chance of failure. CLCs are not as quiet or as dependable, and if the pump dies you have no CPU cooling at all.

Can you recommend a decent air cooler? Would be great if the fans were not too loud.

You could look at the noctua's, or a coolermster 412 - I'm not sure that the 212 could handle the heat

Without knowing what your case CPU clearance is makes it hard to say but some good coolers are Thermalright Machos' and TRUE Spirit 140s'. Macho 120, TRUE Spirit 120, Cryorig H5, be quiet! Pure Rock or Shadow Rock, Phanteks PH-TC12DX are all good .. and that's only the tip of the iceberg.

Where you live makes a difference too. Here I can get TRUE Spirit 140 rev.A for round € 39,99, Macho rev.B is € 42,99, TRUE Spirit 120 is € 27,99 and Macho 120 is € 34,99, H5 is € 39,90, PH-TC12DX is € 49,90.. including 20% tax.

As a comparison, the Macho and TRUE Spirit 140 coolers perform within a couple degrees of and have sound levels similar to NH-D14 .. great cooling and quiet.

Considering that these CPUs are completely hard locked, one could probably get away with the regular reference Intel HSF, the TS13A. It should be able to handle those chips.

The reason I would use something bigger is to be sure they run quiet. 145w is a lot of heat and TS13A is also a pancake cooler. Tower coolers make it much easier to keep heat air away from cool air being supplied to cooler and other components.

Barnacles nerdgasm just built a rig with similar specs on youtube. I think he used 2x noctua u14 heatsinks.

Search for his latest video if you want to see it

Puget Systems did that build using NH-U12S coolers .. which I don't think are quite as good as TRUE Spirit 120 coolers and cost more as well. The TRUE Spirit 120M has base offset so fan does not set out as far in front as others. TRUE Spirit 120i has base offset both forward and to the left. Here they are overlayed on motherboard

Thanks for the suggestion. The TRUE Spirit does look good, but I am worried about the quality of the fan.

Any recommendations for a replacement fan?

Stock TY-121 BW fan is quite good. 600-1300rpm is quiet and delivers 46cfm.

I've never had a Thermalright fan fail me. Only ones I've replaced was because I wanted black / white colors.

If you want more cfm, the PWM GT 2150 is about as good as it gets, but much be ordered from China.

EK - Vardar F1, F2, F3 and F4 are looking good.

Honestly, I think you will be quite happy with the stock TY-121

only reason is because I read that the fan can make an annoying clicking noise.

I'll try it out and how they pan out.

Again thanks for your advice.

SuperMicro 4U active HSF, work great and are cheap. They also come with square and narrow to work with various E5s. You could replace the fan with a noctua if you wanted, but with PWM there's really no point.

doyll - Those pictures scare me if it's not a tower, I don't like the idea of a DP system in a rackmount chassis blowing air sideways, not efficient at all, would cool much better with them turned sideways blowing one way or the other with the case/mid fans. Obviously if it's a desktop tower setup it could be exhausting straight up and sucking in fresh from the back heh.

Thanks for the advice! Those fans are SUPER quiet!

Have them on an open bench, and I cant hear them at all! :D
