Xeon Cooling Question?

I am building a Dual Quad-Core Xeon system for a client but ran into something rather interesting with regards to cooling...

I am ordering 2 Xeon X5355 Processors.

But there are 2 models of that processor to choose from.

The first is model number: BX80563X5355P (P for passive cooler) and model number: BX80563X5355A (A for active cooler).

My first choice was to order the BX80563X5355A processor with the active cooling, but our vendors have it backordered until June 15th. I looked over the spec sheet and it seems the ONLY diffrence between the 2 processor models is the coolers.

So what I want to know is... What is the difference with the 2 heatsinks? I'm assuming one has a fan and one dose not... am I correct?

Is the passive cooler bigger than the active? Is it any good?

This computer will be in a Thermaltake Armor Extreme case with lots of fans; it’s going into an office that is pretty warm so I want to be sure cooling is good. Its going to be used for BIG rendering so its safe to say this processor combo will spend LOTS of time at 100% usage!

not that i have any clue how those passive coolers look like, but they would have to be pretty damn massive

if you are going with two quads, i would surely recommend getting active cooling, those things suck a lot of power, and if they are gonna be running pegged at 100% a lot, then you shouldnt skimp on cooling

also, im not entirely 100% sure, but dont s771 xeons use some weird different sort of mounting the heatsink by screwing it into the case? you might want to double check that, if they use standard s775 style cooling, why not order the passive ones, and if the coolers arent good enough, you could just put two killer s775 sinks on

For a power supply I went with the SilverStone OP1000 Olympia 1000W PSU This client also has a power hungry ATI FireGL V7350 video card going into this new rig.

And I think you are correct I believe the heatsinks screw threw the MB and have nuts that go on the back. I have that sinking feeling that 775 Heatsinks are out of the question. :(

The passive cooler will almost certainly NOT be sufficient in a typical case. Although I cant be certain, the passive cooler will most likely look like one of these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835184103. Those are designed for 2U Rackmuont chassis with lots of airflow across them (have you ever heard those things, theyre LOUD). If these are being installed in a standard case, youd probably have buy additional heatsinks&fans for youre xeons if you went with the passive version. If you are ok with that, then the passive ones should be fine

Thanks for the responce Yes you are correct its a passive "2U" heatsink.

The case this system is going in is the Thermaltake Armour Extream Edition, It has 2 cooling ducts that extend from the side of the case onto the processors heatsink area.

I am going to be installing 2 92mm fans in theese ducts to move air directly onto the CPU heatsinks.

Do you think my setup will offer enough cooling? Or should I wait for the back ordered processors with the active cooling?

You sure that case has the mounts on the mobo tray to support the new Xeon heatsinks? They seem to be so thrilled about how they case is all setup for AMD Quad FX...

Also if it helps yor decision any. The new Dell Precision 690 workstations support dual quad core Xeons and they use passive heatsinks. The processors are in a tunnel with a 6" fan at the front of the case. The machine is near dead silent even when under heavy loads.
