X-TREME NOOB QUESTION!!!

Why is the Xeon processor a server cpu? what makes it better for a server? Could it be used in a regular pc?

And doesn't AMD have a version of the xeon? Is it the operatron?

the opteron is not a "version of the xeon". they are two different unrelated products targeted to the same audience. intel's server/workstation cpu is the xeon, amd's server/workstation processor is the opteron.you can use it in a regular computer if you like, but they are usually more expensive because they are faster in most cases.

I think it's because they are made to be more acceptable in a multi-processor environment. 2 processors on a board vs. 2 die in one package.

they've generally passed more rigorous testing as well to ensure stability.

that's why enthusiasts are buying opterons like house on fire. they're the most reliable, thus overclock the best.

doesn't intel's xeon has more cache over the pentium 4's too?
