Anyone know what platform you're going to need to run the new 5500 CPU's? I'm guessing because it uses the new "QPI" interlink instead of FSB, it won't run on any of the current platforms.

Does anyone out there know what timeframe the new CPU's will be coming out? And when the motherboards will be coming out? Is it going to use regular DDR3 memory? Or are we going to get screwed with FB-DIMMs again?

They're Core i7 processors with 2 QPI links instead of the one that you find in the regular desktop variants. They'll be using ECC DDR3. Only the quad socket 1567 boards will be using FB-DIMMs. Socket type is actually the same as the desktop stuff (still 1366, however, they'll be sporting two sockets), so I presume you'll be able to use the Xeon processors in regular desktop boards as well (not the other way around however). As for availability, I unfortunately have no idea. Next couple months most likely.
 
Thanks Blue Fox. I'm guessing the 1567 Socket is to add a 3rd QPI link? Or is it for more then 3 channels of DDR3 memory?

I can't wait till Dual Socket 1366 boards come out. I don't want to invest in any more Xeon boards right now with them coming around the corner.

If anyone out there knows anything about dates, that would be VERY helpful for me & my IT budget! Thanks!
 
extra channel of ram (and FB-DIMMs) and two additional QPI links.
Probably be able to use a i7 9xx in the xeon boards, just not more than one.
 
Thanks guys, still looking for the release date of the Gainestown (Dual 1366 Socket) platform and the 5500 Xeons. If it's going to be by March, then I'm going to hold off buying a new Xeon system. If it's going to be June, I might buy a few to hold me over.

Not for a while. Intel only just released their 6 core chips recently. I would say another year before it hits MP boards and even longer for it to trickle down into consumer stuff.
 
Yea but the thing is their 6 core chip is like $2.4k a pop. But the thing is all the motherboards like this one needs 4 of those. So can you imagine spending $10k alone on CPUs?
 
Yeah, and the consumer level stuff won't have 16MB of L3 cache on top of 9MB of L2 cache. That helps with the cost as well.

pftt! threads / cores =p look at suns chip :D 32threads and 8 cores!!

anyway the new xeons are probably going to be fairly expensive judging by spec alone, 2 / 4 QPI :S
