I have an old Dell PowerEdge SC440 with a Xeon 3060 chip in itl. I have found it to be slow acting as a media server running Windows Home Server 2011.

I also have a spare computer laying about that has a Core 2 Duo e4600 in it.

Would I be better off with the Xeon or C2D for Windows Home Server 2011?

Hardly enough information to answer that question. What all are you running on it? What are the full system specs? Elaborate on what you mean it was slow acting.

ok. The only difference between the two computers is the motherboard and cpu. one has a xeon 3060 the other c2d e4600.

other than that both would be spec'd the same with dual 1.5tb sata drives and the onboard video.

Using the windows home server 2011 for serving my music and video library to PS3's Roku's and iPad 3.

The slow down seems to be when it is indexing the library or when streaming video there will be "hiccups" and system slowdown. I just wondered which processor would be better suited to media streaming.
