In researching Xen I could not find a straight answer as to whether the latest Xen server (free edition) supports PCI passthrough for a OpenIndiana/Solaris Express ZFS server install with an HP SAS Expander card like esxi does (unfortunately esxi has too low limitation on cores/vcpu/memory). If anybody knows then any information would be appreciated...
 
i am pretty sure it does not... such a shame too.
they could really grab some attention with the ESXi licenses going crazy.
 
The problem is, besides the "home" or "lab" users, who really uses PCI passthrough? I know in our environment we have no need, not to mention the limitations of using PCI passthrough (no vmotion, memory reservations for the guest, etc.). For our systems, HA and DRS are the two most important aspects of our VMWare environment. Really, what's the point of having multiple hosts if the VM's aren't allowed to vmotion due to hardware failuers or resource contention?

For a home server/lab, especially the all-in-one idea, the PCI Passthrough is important, but that isn't where the money is so I just don't see a reason for Hyper-V or Xen to really focus on it. It's a little niche that VMWare has right now.... for some reason ;)
 
I don't have a single customer doing PCI passthrough. I've seen a few special uses cases but nothing even remotely close to mainstream.
 
nope it doesn't, I use it at the DC and have never really needed PCI passthrough.
 
I'm pretty sure they still don't support it, however there is stuff out there to manually do it (no guarantees on reliability.

It has technically been available in Xen since 2005... Citrix clearly has no current motivation for it in the Enterprise market. However you should be able to make it work from what I've been reading; yummy CLI goodness.
