XCOM Trailer

This game looks like a giant barrel of disappointment. An xcom action shooter could have been epic, if they kept the central theme of defend the earth, kill the aliens and use their tech against them.

But no, it looks like McCarthyism vs the tar monsters. I'll be avoiding this one purely on morals.

Possibly, but compare the sales of those 600k back when the game was made and very few people had home PCs to today. Market penetration was way higher.

Oh, does your 600k also include the number of "UFO: Enemy Unknown" as it is called in Europe?

Yes. The game even sold better in Europe than it did in the US.

Not sure if you read the IGN article but it sounds liek what your describe. Non-linear storyline where you pick what you want to do. Research new weapons...etc.

I just pulled up that article, and it sounds a hell of a lot better than it did just from that trailer. It doesn't look like it maintained the turn-based mechanic, and we have no idea about other aspects like how research etc. will be controlled, but check it out: http://pc.ign.com/articles/109/1096051p1.html

In regards to it using the X-Com name while being an FPS. Basically, completely ignoring why X-Com was a good game in the first place, which is a good, atmospheric turn-based strategy.

^Sad yes. But hell, it happened to Fallout.

The game still looks great though. It's a shame that gamers don't have the appetite for 2d games. Very few have the patients required to play games that take time, games dependent on stories, or anything too engrossing; The need for 'insta-thrill' has pu many genres on the endangered species list. Namely Adventures, P & C, Puzzle, and Turned Based Strategy games, etc....

I think it is safe to say that those types of games will have no place in big budget titles. With that said though, we should see plenty of room in the indie market especially with people realizing its possible to make indie games profitable.

Thanks for posting the link. It might be a horrible game but from the writeup it at the very least caught my attention. I wanted to play the game they described.;)

Agreed, it sounds like the trailer might just be misleading. Hopefully it is...

I understand the aspect of fighting aliens and the need to run if you are ill equipped to fight them, but I'm just not feeling the package that they put it in. Fighting black goo and monoliths isn't as exciting as facing down a little green man with an energy rifle.

I'll pass. I think I'd still have more fun playing the original. They don't make em like they used to I guess.

Even if the game never mentioned the word XCOM, it still looks really dull to me. Guess we'll see how it progresses.
